USB Powered Monitors
I saw this article today about USB powered monitors.
AOC To Roll Out USB-Powered LCD This would be an awesome move in my opinion. Anything that gets rid of extra wires is a plus in my view. To make it mainstream I would think a tech like Gigabytes USB 333 would be needed. I Hate Wires!

Re: USB Powered Monitors
this could seriously mess with the motherboard's current/voltage regulators....
i wouldn't use one if i could help it... less stress and less noise on the motherboard's power distribution, the better...

Re: USB Powered Monitors
IF it is going to need one USB cable for power and the usual DVI/HDMI/VGA connection for everything else, how is it better than a normal monitor? Also, extra risk of frying it too if something goes wrong with the PC's PSU and/or mainboard.
Now, if it was wireless power from the socket, that's something I would like to see.

Re: USB Powered Monitors
i dont think 8w displays would ever come out all that good...
they would have to either be very small or very dim.

You'd be surprised what high end LED/OLED low power high output technology can do.

Re: USB Powered Monitors
i am pretty well informed about the advances of LED technology in recent years... however, driving both an LCD panel of approximately 1920x1080 at 60hz, have reasonable response time AND a backlight powerful enough to work with that screen real estate seems very questionable...
the only viable alternative is the, currently near impossible to bring to market in anything other than mobiles, OLED display technology which probably costs more than the potential product's weight in gold right now...

Asus Shows 24-inch LED USB-Powered Monitor | ITProPortal.com
I get the impression from this article that the picture & power are transmitted over the same cable. How this would work though I am confused about. It's interesting tech though. I would rather the monitor received power/data over one discrete cable from the PC, than having to have a chunky power cord plugged into the powerstrip. Until the day that monitors can be fitted with micro-fusion power reactors and need no wires at all
