BOOTMGR is missing

Hi
I recently put a new SATA hard drive into my HP touchsmart. I thought all i had to do then was chuck the recovery discs in and it would reload my OS. It didn't. So I got hold of a new XP disc - still no joy. I have been into the bios menu etc and changed every setting under the sun, but it still just comes up wih this message: BOOTMGR is missing

Can anyone help me, I'm close to throwing it out of the window!

I used to get that message when I had a USB drive connected at bootup. Unplugging it would let the system read the hard drive and boot properly.

Are you using the option to select the boot device from a list? As oppose to setting the boot order inside the bios?

Do you have a specific model number?
