i7-950 or i5-2500k for new build?
i know this is actually all over the net on various forums but everyone wanted to use these cpus for gaming or video coding
personally i'm gonna be using my new pc_build for: 1.music production(cubase, amplitube, superior drummer 2.0) and 2.extreme programming(visual studio(c++,java)and matlab(2000-4000 lines of code projects)and some heavy data mining later on(i study electrical/computer engineering) ) i will start with 8gb ram(corsair vengeance) and later on i will propably need some more (+4gb)for my bigger projects im also considering the amd phenom x6 1100t i know there are many great reviews about the above cpus(including the one on this website) but all the comparisons focused on graphics stuff like video coding and video gaming i wanna know which is better for my personal needs Last edited by johnyvoyager; Jul 20, 2011 at 09:53 PM. |

Re: i7-950 or i5-2500k for new build?
Are you planning on overclocking? The 2500K has an unlocked multiplier, meaning it can overclock easier than a regular Intel CPU. In either circumstance, go with the 2500k. An i7-950 and AMD 1100T are about equal in speed (with the 950 having a slight edge), and with eight cores (4 real, 4 threaded) the i7-950 would outperform the X6. The 2500K is slightly faster than the i7-950.
TLDR: i5 2500K. It overclocks easier than the i7-950 and 1100T, overclocks higher, is faster (at stock and on OC), runs cooler, and has more total cores with threading.

as for 1100T is it really slower than 2500k (core to core) Last edited by johnyvoyager; Jul 20, 2011 at 10:18 PM. |

Re: i7-950 or i5-2500k for new build?
the 2500k doesnt have hyperthreading, and yes, per core, the 1100T is slower.
if money is no issue, i recommend a 2600k for heavily multithreaded apps but if money is still an issue, the 1100T is probably a bit better to build with as its easier on the wallet overall. the 2500k is more suited for gaming than multithreaded programs, but it still is a very good CPU.

Re: i7-950 or i5-2500k for new build?
I would stretch for the 2600K, it has HT and also a little more cache. I would not get the 1100T in these case, as the intended use of the PC is really more up Intel's alley.
If you think about it, the i7 950 + X58 MB, is going to cost a little more even compared to the 2600K + Z68 mobo anyway. For the 2600K, you really need a Z68 motherboard, not H67, not P67. You probably won't need more the 8GB of RAM, but since it's so cheap now, just put a 16GB kit, perfectly identical RAM, you can avoid possible stability problems with mismatched DIMMs in the future (even if the ram is called the same, they revise it often, they use diffrent IC and so on, so it's hard to find exactly the same RAM, even three months from now).
