Power Supplies

Alright guys, this is my last component for my current build. I'm using a GTX 580 SC DS, 12 GB corsair RAM, Core i7 2600k.
Any suggestions?

Hmmm, really? Only 750W? That GTX 580 sure is a power sucker!
Maybe it's for safety measures, I've seen other build that require WAY more than the required wattage.

these days, if you buy quality, you'd be surprised at what a 'modest' PSU can handle

< look at my specs

my 470 isn't very far off a 580 in terms of power draw under load, add in the 260², a half dozen hdd's and a couple other bits & bobs (X-Fi Fatal1ty & IO panel, couple hdd docks); all powered happily by a 680W Be Quiet!

Re: Power Supplies

I had a look at a power supply calculator a while back to see what sort of PSU two GTX 570s would require. They reckon an 800W. I checked for twin 580s too for sanity's sake. 800W. I'd imagine 750W will suffice for a single 580 but if you're going to double-up, maybe something a bit extra.

Re: Power Supplies

I'm looking at the Corsair HX850..good reviews and pleanty of power...and as the years drag on and developers make more and more games that require High-end GPU, I'm sure I could shell out some $500 to get ANOTHER GTX 580....and as of now, I believe that the GTX 580 is the fastest single GPU card in the world?

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that Modular is the way to go these days, as it is easier and better for cable management.

*Off topic*
Currently looking at the Corsair H60 for a CPU cooler...would that sufficeif I were to say....OC my 2600K? Suggestion?

Thanks

Re: Power Supplies

850W is good future proofing, in case a more powerful card comes along or you put more hardware in the casee..

modular or not is all a personal preference. There is no "way to go".

The H60 is watercooling. That will definitely be helpful when you are going to overclock.

Re: Power Supplies

750w can generally handle 2 of the most powerful single GPU cards on the market at this time, but thats pushing it.

850w can do better and potentially handle 2 dual GPU cards at load but thats REALLY pushing it... a 950w would be recommended for a Quad GPU system.

i dont see any need for anything greater than 750w, but if an 850w model is not much further up the ladder then go for it.

as for the modular PSUs, its all preference. many people still use non modular and i only build with non modular PSUs unless otherwise directed. Its usually not that hard to find a space for the extra cables.

Re: Power Supplies

Ahhhh...I think I'm going to go with a 850W just in case I want to upgrade to a second card. Corsair has a awesome 7 year warranty.

As for the CPU cooler...the only problem with a water cooler, is that if it stops working, you have to RMA it. But if it's just a fan/heatsink...you can just drive to FRY's and pick up a fan..
One option would be the Cooler Master Hyper 212? What do you guys think?

Re: Power Supplies

Frys do tend to have Corsair Hydro coolers on the shelves, I dont think theyre recent models but they should still have them.

as for the warranty, be sure to buy an AX series power supply if you want that 7 years, the rest are all 5 years.

I believe that the HX series also has the 7 year warranty.
I I should be able to order the parts soon. I'll do some benchmarks and post some pictures.

Anyone have steam? If so..username?

Re: Power Supplies

Go with the AX series, the HX series, though it does have the 7 year warranty isn't fully modular.

The AX series also uses better parts and is more efficient for only $15 more.

Thanks, I'm going with the Corsair Hyper 212+ with some Artic Silver 5 thermal paste. If I have the desire to OC past 5 GHz then I'll spend a few hundred for full water cooled system.

I currently have the Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z on my list, could anyone else recommend a high end motherboard for socket 1155?

Thanks
