Re: New Computer Build

an i7-2600K would be better for gaming, not to mention a LOT cheaper. Check benchmarks from almost anywhere the i7-990x is more for rendering not gaming. So basically you would be buying a CPU that is meant for making movies and art assets for games not playing them.

So basically considering what you were looking at and brands.

CPU: i7-2600K $315
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z $360

Mind you there are cheaper motherboards from Asus that would suit your needs, but I pulled the most expensive one from Asus as that was what you picked for the 990x.

For your Harddrives I would either recommend getting a decent sized SSD for your boot drive or at minimum a 7200rpm Black from WD or maybe a Raptor a 1TB WD Caviar Black runs $90 and trust me it is well worth the extra dough. Waiting for windows to load would otherwise take forever.

Re: New Computer Build

yup those two suggestion would be very appropriate that processor is overkill for gaming and the benefits are not worth it, the money saved would be better spent on a graphics card, also an I hear that an SSD is the way the future is going even if i have never used one the benchmarks speak for themselves.

The question is what is everything else. Because the only things that would benefit from the 6 core are programs like Maya and 3ds Max and even then given the Videocard such a benefit would be wasted on a non Pro Graphics card. (Quadro or FirePro series). We really do need to know what the focus of this computer will be. If you need to be running these programs we can make sure the build will be able to handle games. Although when your focusing on these programs gaming will take a hit.

Basically what are you going to be going to school for and what other programs are you planning to run.

Re: New Computer Build

Don't scoff at the 580/590's capabilities in terms of graphic design/modelling. It can beat out several low end pro cards :P

I have a 980X, but I also have reason (I encode/decode bluray videos a lot, I also do a lot of large image photoshop/hd video editing/sfx) to need the extra cores (and power). In all honesty, an i5-2500K should be able to run any game made in the next four years with no issues at all (an i7-2600K would be overkill).

And almost all ASUS mainboards are very good. Non-mATX boards will basically all serve your purpose (although if you want to SLI/Xfire you should find a board with widely spaced x16 lanes).

Re: New Computer Build

Rampage III Black edition isnt an LGA 1155 board...

you will either need to change the CPU to an LGA 1366 socket CPU or change the board to an appropriate LGA 1155 board...

Re: New Computer Build

the LGA 1155 is overall better than LGA 1366 unless youre doing very specific stuff that requires a whole lot of PCIe slots or a whole lot of processing threads...

LGA 1366 doesnt natively support SATA III, LGA 1155 does, LGA 1366 CPUs are all built on 45nm technology except for the i7-970 6-core CPU, all of which dont clock as well as the 2600k...

that system will run hotter than any sandybridge system and become obsolete in a few months... actually, i guess technically, it is already obsolete.

GPU needs really depend on the monitor(s) and resolution you plan on gaming at. So depending on what resolution you plan on gaming at we could recommend GPUs that can fit those needs for instance the 6990 and GTX590 are good for gaming at multi-monitor resolutions. If you are using a monitor with a 1920x1080 or 1680x1050 (common 20"/23" monitor resolutions) such a card would be overkill even at max settings.

I recently sold my Palit Geforce GTX 460 GPU on ebay for £88 and bought an ASUS Maximus IV Extreme Z mobo for £172, about £80 - 100 less than list price so that's one way to do it but you have to be careful. I bid for (and won) an Intel i7 2600K CPU for £200 from a guy with just 4 feedback but the creep took my money and closed his account without sending the CPU. I got my money back from Paypal and used it to buy another one from a guy with 300+ feedback.

So I'd say ebay is a good way to do it but don't overbid and make sure the person has good feedback. If they don't mention it, ask if the component had any "issues" when they were using it.
