Have you checked with Compaq to see if they have the appropriate drivers for it?

Re: Hp Compaq nx9010 Xp to Vista. NO SOUND AT ALL!!!!
That's the Conexant AC97 sound chip (specifically the CX20468-31), and has always been a problem with Vista/Windows 7, especially when trying to find a 64bit driver.
That leads me to a question: which version of Vista are you installing? 32bit or 64bit? Not sure if these will work 100%, but you might give the following a try. Just download the file for the version of OS you are using. 32bit 64bit Let me know if it works for you, and if not I'll send you a link to a driver pack that might help. |

One option you do have, IF you've installed a legit copy of Vista and have it activated, is to use the Windows Update option to see if it can find the drivers for the device. HOWEVER, Windows Update has been known....and I've experienced this myself!....to actually mis-identify the audio device in the system and install the WRONG drivers for it. So, you need to actually know what audio device is in that system and make sure that the Windows Update, if it does find drivers, that it is identifying the proper device. Finally, my own opinion is that that laptop is too old and outdated to be able to run Vista properly. You're better off sticking with XP and get the updates for XP using Windows Update. |
