I have like 5 years old computer (uses 755 socket lol)
i believe it's just power supply that's broken because i can't power it on. (been turn on like 24/7 for long long time. rebooted when there is update or when ever i feel like i have to restart) so, im trying to buy new computer case Antec Lanboy Air (with total 15 fans + 2 fan controllers). before it was using 400w power supply. what should i buy for the new power supply to support the fans (all have led lights) Other thing is, if this is not working because of other problems, i want to build the computer later on, so should i buy like 1000w power supply to use later goods for new computer build? or just good enough power supply for cheaply? Please help me out. Thanks. |

Re: HELP buying Power Supply for my old computer.
Unless you're planning to get a quad core CPU, two or more GPUs and overclock the heck out of them, you won't need 1000W.
Knowing the exact specs would help, but for an older single GPU PC even something like Corsair Builder Series CX430 V2 430W should suffice and it would do fine for most modern single GPU, unoverclocked machines. For a bit of futreproofing, you may go with Corsair Builder Series CX600 V2 600W or Corsair Enthusiast Series TX650 650W.

Re: HELP buying Power Supply for my old computer.
My brother, who's into electronics, was always of the opinion that using a heftier PSU than needed is a good thing. It not only ensures you have enough power when demanded, but also makes it where the PSU is never "straining its nuts" as he puts it.
Just because a PSU has a high rating doesn't mean it's necessarily going to suck more power. Your components will only take the power they need and the PSU will......my bro rambles on about pulse widths and stuff like that which I don't understand, but the PSU won't ever have to struggle if it's far beyond the rating you actually needed and shouldn't use any more power than your old PSU did. I'd say go for that 1000 watt monster if you want. It won't hurt anything. |

Re: HELP buying Power Supply for my old computer.
ok, i think i would just buy higher watt power supply.
just having extra watt wouldn't hurt + will be still useful later on if i get newer computer parts to use. Thanks guys |

Re: HELP buying Power Supply for my old computer.
Get a quality supply, even if it's less watts.... a cheap no-name brand 1000watt supply is not the way to go.

Other than that, yeah, I agree, getting a PSU that's "too powerful" isn't something you'll end up regretting. The thing is, though, that even with just the TX650, even most higher end systems will be "overspecced". Take this result as an example, a six-core CPU and a GTX 580 and only 368W maximum draw, and that's measured at the wall, at 85% efficiency, meaning that the actual load on the PSU was below 320W. So getting a 1kW PSU won't hurt, but for 99% of us there's really no need to go that crazy. ![]() EDIT: As Ty said, good brand is way more important the declared power. With a good brand, you get a PSU where reality matches what it promises and, equally importantly, brand name PSUs are better equipped with various safety mechanisms designed to save your PC in case of power surges and the like.

Re: HELP buying Power Supply for my old computer.
These are the manufacturers I'd recommend:
- Corsair (there's a general consensus that they make great PSUs) - Enermax (these guys are legends and their current product lineup seems to justify that) - Sapphire (designed by Enermax, great reviews) - Cooler Master (very positive reviews and owner feedback, as far as I can tell) - SeaSonic (often manufactures quality PSUs for other brands) EDIT: Just to do my own PSU justice, I own a SilverStone and it's been working great, so there are a couple of other trustworthy manufacturers, but these are the first ones that crossed my mind and probably the most likely ones for you to find in any store.

Re: HELP buying Power Supply for my old computer.
That looks like a great choice, 80A on the 12V rail, an 80+ Silver certificate and lots of happy owners for a rather competitive price.

Re: HELP buying Power Supply for my old computer.
One thing with new PSU and older board, if the board goes back to before the 12V centric era, or requires the -5V. then it may have problems with the modern standard.
Can't find a 755, the closest being 754 (AMD) or 775 Intel - both of which seem to belong to the modern 12V power era.
