Dell Studio 1557 overheating during gaming (specifically Hard Reset , the game)
Hi!
Sorry if this is the wrong sub forum, I looked and look but there didn't seem to be a general sub-forum for this kind of thing, unless I'm completely mistaken and this entire forum isn't for this kind of issue at all :L. I was playing Hard Reset today, when suddenly, BAM, the laptop just shut itself down. I needed to give it a ~5 minute cool down period before it would start up again, after which the CPU temperature was still very high (it's around 68-72 degrees). It never used to do this, is there anything I can do without having to take it apart? (I probably will need to clean out the fan soon, but I always find laptops a massive pain to take apart.) My laptop is a Dell Studio 1557 with a 1.66ghz i7 core and 4gb of ram. While I'm here, I have another minor issue, which someone may have an easy fix for: Yesterday, my laptop started going into standby when I closed the lid, despite the setting in my power options saying 'do nothing' when lid is closed. I double checked it and triple checked it to make sure it was, and no luck in fixing the problem. Any ideas? :S Thanks in advance, Justin |

Can you check the temperature of the GPU too and what GPU do you have? The Intel GM4500HD or the AMD/ATI?

My GPU is the 4570 Mobility Radeon card (I believe that's ATI). Now that you mention it this may be the cause, because on canyourunit my laptop actually failed the test for Hard Reset, but I can still play it. The only times I get lag is when I blow something up very close to me, which causes a massive drop in fps/lag, or maybe both.

Check the temp then. See if that is the reason.

I checked it using HWMonitor, and even when idle (steam running, but no games running, firefox running, minimal background processes), my cores are ate 56 degrees, and my GPU is at 62 degrees consistently. Is this normal? :S (I'm on a laptop)

I have no idea, I don't know how accurate it is for a laptop. I guess you should also check when a demanding game is running. Play for a while and then check the temps.
BTW, just to make sure, the degrees are in Celsius, right?

Re: Dell Studio 1557 overheating during gaming (specifically Hard Reset , the game)
You didn't mention how you have your laptop situated when gaming. Is it on your lap, table, bed? Is the laptop super hot on the bottom when it does crash? Either way given the series' known heat related issues I would take a look at propping up the back of the laptop a bit to allow more airflow underneath. Also, if the bottom is/gets hot I would look into buying a laptop cooler to help keep the heat under control.

Re: Dell Studio 1557 overheating during gaming (specifically Hard Reset , the game)
Okay, will run an intensive game and post the results. It is propped up at the back, but it's by a flat cooling fan that's on an angle, so I guess there's still no circulation out the bottom of the laptop. The surface of the bottom of the laptop isn't actually particularly hot itself, as there's a cooling fan. But that isn't really an indicator of the inside, so...yeah D=.
