Hey!
I have waited and waited for the AMD Bulldozer and I heard it is coming in October but I think it will be a while before motherboards etc come flooding in Canada ?

So my dilemma is the following. I have a 5+ year old rig (AMD 939 64bit...) computer that I have been using but it is becoming more and more of a pain to use it due to software requirements and it has some compatibility issues with Windows 7. All I need is a motherboard, cpu and ram.

This isn't like mission critical or anything but I can't decide... Ivy Bridge will have native USB 3.0 support and more... The AMD Bulldozer CPUs could be awesome... What do you think? Should I just go ahead and buy?

AM3+ 990fx boards are out right now so it should be fine for you to upgrade to a bulldozer ready system now if you dont feel like waiting any longer... just get a cheap CPU to hold you off and you should be ready for anything!

Sandy Bridge-E (Ivy Bridge comes even later) should be pretty good but i highly doubt itll be cheap... as good as intel's stuff is... and as bad as their marketing practices are, i do not believe the average user can even see a huge difference between the upcoming flagship platforms, either one is good.

motherboard, CPU and RAM are major upgrade for me, which I do not do. I rather build new than upgrading old.

I would sell old or just give it away, this way you made someone smile.

Why not get a P67 based rig? 32nm is already here for that platform, and it should be roughly as fast in anything that doesn't use 8 cores, especially when overclocked. Plus, you'll save yourself a lot of cash compared to Ivy Bridge, which is a high-end platform (like X58 when it came out).

Essentially an 1155 Z68 (who wants P67?) rig would be able to last as long as any 1366 rig. The 2600K can give the 980X and 990X runs for their money in terms of pure overclocking and speed (but does fall short in cores...since it has less cores!). Don't think because you're not getting Ivy Bridge you're getting shafted

Hmmm... I will try to hold off. The reviews for the Bulldozer looks great. Going to buy hard drives to keep me occupied.

Edit: Just for my own info... How would the following look

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K - $304
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Pro Rev 3.1 - $172.64
Memory: 8GB DDR3 1800 (recommend me brand)
(Budget: ~$600 max. Anything better I can do??)

And if I went the AMD Zambezi route I can just buy a AM3+ motherboard? And with BOTH Intel and AMD after buying this rig to upgrade to new CPU would mean I need to get a new motherboard because of the socket FM2 for AMD etc?
Also the benchmark results are all over the place, is AMDZONE generally credible? Jeez I don't get how I built my rig years back -_-. HMMM

Why 8GB of RAM? Unless you need them, 4GB are plenty.

I heard that the new (this year?) Intel CPUs will have a very powerful GPU inside them. Perhaps it would be worth it to wait for that.

I don't really see the any advantage to Z68 for anyone wanting to use a discrete GPU. Each to their own.

Agreed. You can always get more later at a cheaper price.

They will have a very powerful GPU by Intel standards. I'd Llano league performance, but that's just a wild educated guess. I wouldn't mind betting that enthusiasts will still be wanting discrete GPUs for that platform.

Meh. P67 would be fine, but it seems limiting (Z68 allows integrated graphics and SSD caching).

And ram is already dirt cheap -- I bought 12GB for $500 back in the day. If he's a gamer or using Adobe software, he could actually hit 4GB (I do regularly).


And yes, the integrated graphics will be strong -- but not comparable to a discrete GPU. If you wanted to play old games or Valve games it would probably be fine, but otherwise it doesn't matter.

Well then yeah, 8GB is a good idea.
I recently installed virtualbox (don't forget to install the guest addition) and installed XP on it. Wonderful piece of software. I mean the VM not XP.

Okay - finally have time to build a new computer... I haven't done this in ~5 years *_*.
Uh... My budget is $750 for just CPU, RAM, Motherboard and maybe a video card. The system is used for video editing, games, virtual box, and regular day stuff.

I have currently
PSU - Corsair PSU (750 Watt)
Video Card - Nvidia GTX 460 - 1GB ... I'm thinking of just getting another and SLI...

I'm going to go with the Intel Sandy Bridge so I was told to get a z68 chipset but soo many choices. What motherboard should I get (I have hate for AsRock & I would like to have as many sata ports as possible and sli/crossfire)? Also should I sli the gtx 460??

Bulldozer reviews were really iffy/negative. So instead of waiting for its release I should've just bought a rig in September to replace my desktop, also had more time then too because less school! .

I didn't say Bulldozer sucked . Just based on the reviews I've read, it wouldn't fit my needs. Hopefully later generations will get better and my next upgrade will mean switching boat back to AMD ... But maybe it has to due with optimization for the bulldozer architecture? I'm science student no clue about this.

I upgraded from phenom2 550 to 1055 x6 and i saw a great improvement across the board.So dont cancel out amd x6
