Hey guys I have decided to upgrade my cpu and board after couple of months. I think that a i5 2500k will suffice. I like to play latest games too so need a feature rich but affordable board which have upto 8 gb ddr3 ram at 1600 MHz.
Please give the boards name and I also want 2-way SLI on board. Will I gain performance in games as I will overclock this CPU as well with my cooler master hyper TX3 cooler.THANKS. |

Re: Upgrading cpu and motherboard.
Firstly, you realise that you'll have to get memory at the same time, yes?
To answer one of your questions, whether you'll gain performance in games from an overclocked 2500k compared to your current system depends on the game. I would think that you have a fairly well balanced system for playing games at 1650*1050 at the moment, so the performance increase might be modest rather than huge.

Re: Upgrading cpu and motherboard.
I highly recommend that asus P8H67-M Evo Motherboard combined with either your choice of Patriot 1600mhz or 2000mhz Viper Extreme DDR3 2x4gb Kits.. as they are both very cheap and very fast.
The motherboard is very very feature rich, and quite inexpensive, has a UEFI Bios, numerous usb/sata ports... Is pretty quick on it's feet, and x16 primary pci-ex...... 8/8 mode when filling the 2nd slot. The socket 1155 doesn't really have any boards out that i'm aware of that allows for a FULL x16/x16 pci-ex setup. Socket 2011 should fix that though. I read some "rumors" that stated that the pci-ex Lanes would be increased significantly... potentially doubling the lanes allowing for 4 PCI-ex 16x slots to run at full speed and still have an additional 6x lanes remaining (70 lanes total) for other components... like sound/network adapters, and 4x lanes will be dedicated to the Intel ICH11R (11?) for much better SATA III 6gbps speeds.

Re: Upgrading cpu and motherboard.
If you intend to run a high end graphics card along with the GTX460 you will also need to look at a new power supply too.
For instance, the GTX580, under load, will pull a total of 245w on it's own, and depending on what parts you have in your system, as a whole, you will use about 500-550w (which is why the recommended PSU for the GTX580 is 600w). If you run a game that hammers the GTX460 with PhysX processing (under load the card pulls about 160w) you will easily go above your current PSU. |

Re: Upgrading cpu and motherboard.
I'd have thought GTX460 SLI would outperform GTX580+GTX460 in the majority of games at that resolution. I think your current setup will have no issues with BF3.

Re: Upgrading cpu and motherboard.
im sure he just wants those extra expansion slots.
since his case is an ATX mid-tower, no sense in wasting that space if the extra funds are there. physX is also a dying technology as few developers have even picked it up despite nvidia constantly pushing it... it may be better to just buy another GTX 460 as 2 cards in SLi are more flexible overall with both cards being able to do physx and graphics calculation together.

Re: Upgrading cpu and motherboard.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with a micro ATX board when properly designed, the board Judas linked is a solid one.
but since you arent using a micro ATX tower, no sense wasting the space... either way is fine.
