seventeam WTF

I bought recently a seventeam 650 psu all was well until i put in my asus 460.
I was playing dead island and i could hear a strange noise thinking it was the cpu or vid card's fan going flat out ,but no.After further testing i discovered that it was the psu fan.The fan was spinning ok but no air was flowing to the outlet.I pulled it apart and found a peice of plastic covering half of the 120 fan....and again in big letters WTF.

I removed the plastic cover thingy and no more probs.

Go figure

Indeed. Surprising that a PSU made by a company as well known and trusted as it, would screw something up.

Any idea where the plastic came from? It just doesn't sound like a safe PSU to use.

IT seems that its supposed to be there .They were trying to direct airflow but fail.I,m not sure if this pic worked but it'll give you a much better idea

Between me and you and the internet, I wouldn't trust something like that inside my PC. It's better to get a good and more expensive PSU, than to save few dollars and risk losing your whole PC because of that.

As for the piece of plastic, if true, I haven't seen anything this stupid in a long time.

Having said that, I am getting curious. Is this fan from the inside of the PSU? Because if it is....remove the PSU and get a new one, other moder and/or brand.
It's shocking how bad and unsafe it is.

IF, however, this fan is from the case and not the PSU, but you just have it to blow/suck air near the PSU, then it will probably be ok.

Nah its not the same fan.I was just trying to show how it was set up in the psu.I didnt want to remove the psu again.

Removing the plastic thingy and the psu can breath again and the temp is way down.Ihave a infrared temp gun.But you are right i should go out and buy a better psu

Actually many many many PSU's are designed with the PSU fan partially covered by a plastic portion to help specific direct airflow around components to remove deadzones, or prevent them being created. I think for the last 2 years all the Coolermaster 500 watt psu's I've purchased have this in place but even at peak load or above it's rated loads, the fan has never went crazy and spun up to rediculious speeds, actually i'd say that the fastest I've seen/heard the fans spin up is not likely anything more than 1200rpm still.

But seventeam..... never heard of them... who knows what they did.

Seems to be very common, on "large fan" PSUs, to have something that shades the side of the fan closest to the outlet vent, otherwise a lot of airflow would just be skipping by. Begs the question, is "large fan" superior to 80mm exit fan or dual 80mm fans?

i would say yes..... even with a portion of the 120mm fan being "shaded".. the lower RPMs and the greater airflow that is still obtained is much better.

I did i test on a fan that i had lying around and really did stop air flow

i'm not saying it was a bad choice for seventeam..

but i know precisely what the coolermaster psu's use and have....

It does hinder airflow... but that is the cost of proper cooling at least for the coolermaster supply which forces are to move throughout the psu instead of causing the dead hot air pockets..

There are an unmentionable number of ways to setup the layout of a psu in which the plastic cover would either sevearly demish or potentially harm the cooling of the psu, or significantly improve.

Apparently seventeam did it wrong.
