Upgrade or not?
Since Bulldozer was a bit of a disappointment I'm considering extending the lifetime on my current rig a tiny bit and wait with a new one for a while to see what's happening in the future.
Just wondering if it's worth it to move from my current PII 965 to a 1100T? Can't really say that I'm struggling with anything right now but it's always nice to have a little extra power just in case. I'm gonna do a complete re-install as well since it's been over a year and a half and it's getting a bit bloated and that would be a perfect time to exchange the CPU, if it's worth it. |

Re: Upgrade or not?
Both AMD and Intel are bringing out new processors, supposedly in the next two months so you'd do well to hang on that little bit longer - it could be worth your while.

Re: Upgrade or not?
I aimed at Bulldozer but got me a cheap Ahtlon 2 X4 and even that proved to be fine for demanding games like Battlefield 3(edit: unless you plan to run at Ultra settings, but then what are you doing with a CPU less than i5?), so I'd say wait and see how things look after Ivy Bridge has come out on the market. Which could mean about six months of waiting since Intel need be in no hurry on the desktop side. Unless maybe you're doing a lot of video encoding or such, where the two extra cores can make a difference now. 1100T seems to be going up a bit in price right now though, probably as supply is expected to get low.

Re: Upgrade or not?
If AMD has something better around the corner I prefer that, don't want to jump ship just yet. I'm the stubborn type.. Going to intel isn't quite where I'm at just yet.

Re: Upgrade or not?
I hope too, but frankly don't expect anything significant next year since it would take a lot to improve Bulldozer significantly. What could draw me to Ivy Bridge is if they really succeed in keeping the power consumption down as much as expected with the 22nm process. But I'm in no hurry.
What I dream of is an eight core Llano CPU for AM3+ without a graphics core, but I can't think of a company that would turn around and redo their strategy that much. |

You could wait for Socket 2011, but I've seen nothing to suggest that it'll offer much in performance (let alone performance per cost) over 1155 unless you're doing some seriously heavily threaded (content creation) or memory bandwidth dependent (server) work.

Re: Upgrade or not?
Piledriver could actually not suck, so I'd wait for that. And if you want more performance, OC your processor and get a nice CPU cooler for it.
![]() I also highly doubt an Athlon II has "no trouble" with Battlefield 3, sorry mate

Re: Upgrade or not?
I'm running a PIII-1400S at some insane FSB. I gots Crucial 3x512MB PC133 SDRAM, a GF2 GTS 64MB (5.5ns tech) along with AHS-39160 SCSI and a couple of Fujitsu HDD's that run whisper quiet in a tall - legacy styled - server box along with a 500w PSU just to puts the tightened ribbon around Win2003's R2's neck...
Seems to run BOINC rather well (actually much better that way than with XP Pro SP3)... Since my Saitech X36F & X35T are a bit long in the tooth, and my Samsung 2253LW (native resolution) overpowers my Leadtech GFx card, I can't tell you so much 'bout all that. What I can tell you: find the BEST tech three or four years ago and buy it for DIRT CHEAP. |

![]() Find me a four year old PC "dirt cheap" better than what the OP is already running. What you suggest might (and I stress might) be a viable tactic for getting a basic office or home PC, but if you're into gaming or even multimedia it's really daft, sorry. Technology moves faster than that. Used computer hardware is generally priced fairly competitively with similar performing new hardware anyway. When it's priced cheaper than any new hardware, that's because they don't make anything that bad anymore.

Also, I've seen that the X6's seem to be more forgiving when it comes to overclocking and tend to reach a bit higher than the X4's and that's one of the reasons why I'm considering the exchange. |

Re: Upgrade or not?
I'd say that it's probably worth upgrading to a 1090T rather than the 1100T. Only a .1 Ghz difference in speed which you can 'get back' by OCing.
Of course, you WILL be checking your BIOS and making sure that you have one new enough to support which ever one you decide on, right?
