What's going on??????????????

a friend of my son has a PC that NO settings have been changed, but all of a sudden, when he boots up, it goes to desktop ok. Then when he tries to open any program, the PC suddenly shuts down. the same thing goes on ever time he boots up. Any help or ideals would be welcomed as my son's friend is climbing the wall about this, HELP ANYONE...

Safe mode and run a virus scan for starters.

Along with a virus scan I would also look to a possible hardware issue. In particular, open up the case, and see what kind of condition it is in. Specifically, is it full of dust, and are all the fans working properly (ie. not siezed up) such as those on the video card, CPU, and power supply.

BTW, how long can he keep the computer up and running before it shuts down? And I mean without running a program (so from start up to desktop, and leaving it sit there) before this happens? One thing to check is that while in safe mode, see if it shuts down from that mode too by running a program (something simple, like Word) he knows shut down the machine while at the regular desktop.

If it is a hardware issue it's likely the virus scan would shut it down as well as any other program.

Yep check for the little buggies running around. However, to be honest I haven't had a virus in years. Sooo unless you're into 'dodgy' sites you're probably safe. I don't know. I'm thinking a registry issue that just has flummoxed over time. If you can't get anything going from the previous posters ideas do a back-up of your goodies and do a fresh install. I bet that fixes all your woes
