Re: If Money Were No Object........
A multi CPU multi core system, a single very good but as quiet as possible graphics card, three to 6 monitors with the best possible color reproduction and viewing angles, several fast drives, either mechanical or SSDs, one great mechanical keyboard with backlighting, a very good accurate mouse, a copy of avid pro(aka Media Composer latest version,(if an Apple then avid pro and fcp), a couple of backup devices etc. I would use the system solely for video editing, script writing and programming.

Re: If Money Were No Object........
I'd probably go for something quite simple and elegant. A small case (maybe MATX) with vents only on the front, back and bottom. An SSD and 3 HDDs in raid 5. Socket 1155 and 2600k/2700k (I don't really like the inelegance of partially disabled chips like the 3960x). Hybrid fans all round. A GTX560Ti or something with a low RPM cooler would be fine for graphics. A 2560*1440 Samsung monitor. You get the idea :P

Re: If Money Were No Object........
I'd buy another GTX 570, another 8GB RAM and a Corsair Carbide 400R. Maybe a new PSU too if mine doesn't support three 570s. Oh yeah, a 3TB for backing up too.
What did you expect?

I'd rather have your case than the 400R, Takaharu. Money no object, no upgrade to 3GB 580s or 32nm?

Re: If Money Were No Object........
I honestly have no idea what I would build, but the bastard would not only be fast, it'd
also last me a long time before I had to upgrade. I'm talking like 64GB of 2400MHz RAM. Cause I am seriously sick of falling behind what I end up needing. lol Not that I ever even need the full extent of what I have, anyway but y'know. ![]() Also...it would need to be totally silent, yet still fast...so water cooling I guess. Aaaanyway...

Re: If Money Were No Object........
don't worry.. DDR4 is around the corner... which will bring 2133mhz DDR4 as the lowest end Ram standard.. with speed in excess of 4266mhz in the higher end.
This is potentially going to pop out sometimes next fall/winter. may see previews in the summer

Re: If Money Were No Object........
I doubt it'll make a big difference for most of us. Going for higher frequency or more channels of DDR3 beyond dual channel 1600MHZ seems to be a fairly small performance gain in 95% of applications.

Re: If Money Were No Object........
Honestly, that's a difficult question. My problem isn't money as much as spare time, and in that respect I won't want to deal with a new PC. However if money were no object, then my outlook on life would probably have been quite different, so I can't really say what would have happened.
For now let's say that I'd have stayed with my current PC but would upgrade the graphics card to a Radeon 7970. |

Re: If Money Were No Object........
It'd be quite nice to build a Sempron quad SLI rig on 990FX just for the reactions on forums. Maybe with only 1GB of RAM, if I can get away with that. And a 1990s hard drive.

Re: If Money Were No Object........
My previous reply was somewhat optimistic. A Radeon 7970 won't fit in my case.
![]() Anyway, gave it some more thought. First thing I think I'll do is get an HTPC with a HD capture card. Then I'll buy a new flat where I'll have a computer room of my own with lots of storage space, then I'll add a third monitor, and then I'll consider for quite a while upgrading my desktop PC, will postpone it again and again and finally buy a gaming laptop instead. |

Re: If Money Were No Object........
I already have 12 GB DDR3 RAM and have been down the road with CFx with 2 HD 6870s.
CFx for me, anyway, was no trip through the park. I finally opted to sell both 6870s and go with a single HD 6950 w 2 GB GDDR5 vRAM. So, no, I won't be interested in repeating this mis-adventure anytime soon...actually AT ALL! |

Re: If Money Were No Object........
Come to think of it, I'd probably have a complete do-over.
Core i7 3930K 2x 16GB kits of G-Skill RijawsZ 2133MHz ASRock Extreme9 2x AMD 7970 Coolermaster Centurian 2 6x 3TB HDDs @ 7200RPM 2x SATA-3 SSDs in RAID 0 (whatever's best at the time) 4x 600GB WD Velociraptors Enermax 1250W Best soundcard at the time System professionally watercooled after I stuck the components together. A mechanical keyboard that I fancy at the time + mouse 2x Razer Onza Tournament Edition 3x Dell U2410 (or similar) One of those new 55" really high res TVs Villian chair from I Want One of Those (just because I could) Bang & Olufsen surround sound system with a recommended amplifier. I'd get a pro in to set it up.

I'm sure that for an 8-9 figure sum, Intel would provide you with a fully unlocked SB-E CPU - as in 8 cores, 20MB of cache and unlocked multiplier. Or, if you don't plan on overclocking, you might as well just get the 8 core xeon. Similarly, only two 7970s? Might as well get four, especially if watercooled. And a 580 for Physx. Only one PSU? Only two SSDs raid 0?

Re: If Money Were No Object........
The 3930K is released and, while the 3960K has a higher stock speed and more cache it overclocks to the same speed. In fact, the 3930K out-performs the 3960K on stock according to Passmark. If I really wanted to go all-out on products that aren't available I'd have just said I'd buy a data centre that would give Google a run for its money.
Two 7970s I know work. If three-way works then I'd get a third. However, the Extreme9 only supports 3-way, if I'm not mistaken. You make a good point about the PhysX so maybe a 580 WC, as long as the PSU can handle it. Two SSDs RAID 0 would suffice for me. I'd rather have the storage space that the other drives provide. As for the PSU, a single one fits in the case. Two and you'd need to start modifying the case. While that is possible on an infinite budget it's changing the look of the case. As I chose a specific case I'd prefer to go with that, rather than a custom case or hacking one to bits. By the way, it was supposed to be Cosmos 2, not Centurion.

Re: If Money Were No Object........
I'm sure you could get a second PSU fitted. Money is no object, after all. There's always those 5.25" bay ones if not.
Quad 7970 is unlikely to perform worse than two-way. You make a good point about unavailable stuff, but it remains to be seen whether the 8-core xeons have 3820 style overclocking enabled. If they do, they'd be a solid bet. I'm surprised that there isn't a quadfire board you like. Remember that WC 7970s can be single slot. If you're going for SSD Raid, why not get a raid card or a revodrive and go for the full 2GB/s? :P

Re: If Money Were No Object........
I'd get one of the massive Coolermaster Cosmos Pure Black cases then stock it with an i7, 2 GTX680s and 12gb DDR3 fast memory. On a high end Gigabyte board and a few other luxuries like a large SSD and a 27"+ sIPS LED monitor. Hell if money isn't an issue I'd couple the cards to one of those upcoming LG 50" OLED screens and a 7.1 audio system.
