Odd motherboard related problem.
OK so I supposedly have a motherboard problem, what happens is that usually
the harddrive light glows steady (despite harddrive usage) and my PCI-E 1x sound card refuses to function, I also can't put my PCI-E video card in the other PCI-E slot, when I do, the PC simply refuses to boot. (Two PCI-E x16) Acts as though it isn't getting enough power, the video card's extra power cable is fine though, as the card works in the first PCI-E port just perfect. Last night, all these problems randomly vanished for a while, then returned. The harddrive light also cleared up & flashed normally during the time the soundcard & video ports worked. Any idea as to what would cause this? Thanks

Re: Odd motherboard related problem.
Did you ever have any equipment failures in this system? (PSU, blown sound card, etc.) What about severe power outages? Do any of the capacitors look swollen or leaking on top?
Not sure of the quality of that Rosewill PSU, how old is it?

Re: Odd motherboard related problem.
PSU did go out not too long ago, and it was about 4 years old.
Using a 350 Watt Basiq Power one now, doesn't even get warm tho, so apparently not using too much power. Capacitors in the PSU? Or on the motherboard?

Capacitors on the Mobo.

Re: Odd motherboard related problem.
Thanks then, I'll have a look, but keep in mind, this problem is intermittent.
I'll check it out.

Re: Odd motherboard related problem.
Tell ya what guys, I may finally get off my ass and do a full upgrade soon anyway, and my bro has the same video card as I do. You think since PCI-E 1x & 16x are affected, that it'd be possible for this problem to damage the video card at some point? I'll probly just take it out and give it to him to put into CrossFire or whatever it's called, and start fresh later on. I can survive with my 2003 PC with no problems, don't do anything PC-strenuous these days anyway.

Re: Odd motherboard related problem.
Hard to say if it would effect the video card or not without knowing what the problem really is......

Re: Odd motherboard related problem.
Well folks, after taking my motherboard tray out of the PC, with the mobo still attached,
minus a few shorter cables from here and there, I booted the PC, and it worked normal. Put it back in, reattached cables, failed that time...wha-? Turned out it was the top USB port in the tower, apparently that damn thing was somehow the whole problem. Took the port and cable out, chucked em in a parts box for other uses. (mostly the wire) Anyway, I guess... /thread? Lock post? Uh...

Re: Odd motherboard related problem.
Oh, yeah. Worked just like new as soon as I took that USB port's cable off the board.
What was weird is how it worked with USB devices and stuff, but was screwing up all the other stuff. But I replaced it with a back port, so it's all good now.
