VGA vs HDMI
My old Acer monitor went tits up on Christmas day, so I went to Microcenter and got one of these puppies:
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG S24A350H ToC Rose Black 24" 2ms Full HD HDMI LED BackLight LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 DCR 1,000,000:1 (1,000:1) Now this rascal will take input from either 15 pin VGA, or HDMI. I'm currently using the VGA cable. What would be the pros and cons of using the HDMI output from my 6950 instead of the VGA?

Re: VGA vs HDMI
With a 24" full HD screen like that one there should be a discernable improvement in sharpness over HDMI/DVI compared to a regular VGA connection. However since that graphics card problably don't sport a VGA connector I assume you're using a DVI->VGA adapter, which generally improve the picture a little bit already over a classic VGA connector. So the difference might not be so discernable moving to HDMI in your case. But I'd still do it and the HDMI cables are inexpensive today.

Re: VGA vs HDMI
It depends on the image and the quality of the cables and hardware, but basically what mkk said.
When I have the option, I always choose hdmi or dvi over vga. always.

Re: VGA vs HDMI
Sometimes i find that outputting from the nvidia/ATI/Intel adapters using HDMI tends to show a slightly "washed out" effect... Not always, but it really seems to be just dependant on how the monitor handles HDMI signals.
Otherwise, should be a improvement obviously, may be hard to see it.. but there should be.

Got to reading the specs/manual. Evidently, I can plug in BOTH, and via software, switch back and forth between them. Think I'll just get an HDMI cable and compare the two

Re: VGA vs HDMI
Personally, I find that an HDMI cable gives a better clarity than VGA. DVI vs HDMI is really not noticeable though.
In your case, I'd recommend the HDMI cable to see how you go. If you don't find that it makes a worthwhile difference you can always use the cable for something else later on.

Re: VGA vs HDMI
One other advantage of using HDMI from your AMD card is that, if your monitor has built-in audio, the HDMI cable will also send audio to the monitor.
Otherwise, I have noticed very little image quality difference between the VGA-DVI adaptered image and pure HDMI. |

Re: VGA vs HDMI
Personally, I would recommend DVI/HDMI as they're digital formats and LCD/LED is also digital.
VGA is more prone to signal interference and colour discrepancies than DVI/HDMI (note, MOST of the time; VGA is still more than adequate to deliver an impressive picture). I've seen incorrectly coloured pixels when using VGA on a 24" Phillips LCD using 1920x1080 at work (single turqoise / magenta pixels next to certain white taskbar text for example) that was no longer an issue when switching to DVI. I always run applications at native resolution too... Hope this helps somewhat! cause_of_chaos
