What do you do with your PC?

I haven't seen it posed as a question for all of the forum so I thought that I'd start the topic.

What do you use your PC for?
Also, can you justify your specs?

I use my PC for a large variety of things; my PC is my primary source of information and entertainment and it is my profession. Such activities include:
  • Gaming - I like to be able to play games at high detail.
  • Virtual machines - I often use four virtual machines for testing purposes, hence the RAM. It's good to have a minimum of 4GB to work with with servers and one of mine requires 8GB.
  • Video editing - My fiancée does video editing so I have the software too for her to practice. I've done a couple of minor videos too
  • Watching videos - YouTube, films, series, Blu-Rays, etc. I'm considering Netflix too.
  • Programming - I program in VB.NET and I use SQL.
  • Picture editing - This is very minor, though. It's really just for resizing videos
  • Music - All of my music is on my PC and I listen to it either on my PC speakers or through the stereo speakers on my amp.
  • Internet banking - I keep a record of my finances to ascertain my budget each month.
  • Internet browsing - Funnily enough, I use my PC to browse the Internet
  • Shopping - Any substantial buy will be online, including groceries past a certain weight limit. I also sell stuff online.
  • Anything else that crops up.

As you can guess, my entire day is spent on my PC, near enough. Out and about, I now have my iPad/iPhone.

Re: What do you do with your PC?

my PC is my world ... it's the only thing of value at my home, it's my gaming machine, my work machine, my hobby machine, my entertainment machine, Blu-ray player, Netflix player, utorrent machine, video recorded and editor.... my contact to the outside world for everything.

I pretty much live on a computer.

Re: What do you do with your PC?

This is for myself... And the first two comes first.

A) Internet Use,

* HH News gives me the perfect use of my Internet in my own free time.
* Internet Banking both for myself & my Parents
* Facebook Games like Cityville to pass on sometime
* I use BBC Iplayer very heavily to catch up on stuff i missed during the week

B) Minor Photo Editiing (But mostly for HH News) and Ebay photos

C) Major Gaming periods but mainly at the weekends.

D) The occasional Blu-Ray movie on a sat or Sunday night.

Re: What do you do with your PC?

As with Judas, my Computer occupies a very substansial chunk of my waking hours, and is my portal for everything. I don't own a console, TV or portable device other than a Nokia brick.

So I use my PC for:
-Games in uni holidays (nothing more demanding than Skyrim maxed @2048*1152)
-Document creation (mostly MS Office 2010 atm)
-HD movies & DVDs
-Internet (forums, Youtube, Facebook, email, shopping, journal articles for uni)
-Pidgin (multi-protocol IM client) & Vent/TS3
-Music (Winamp) - not listed in my specs are the Razer Mako 2.1 speakers I won here a few years back. Still awesome.
-Occasional light picture/video editing
-Testing acquired hardware before selling it

So how do I justify my specs? Well mostly my hardware is stumbled upon rather than bought. I upgraded my PC a few years ago to better handle WoW, which I played a lot at a time. That was an E2220 and a 9600GT. Since then I've won and stumbled accross hardware rather than buying anything new - other than a used 2048*1152 monitor, which is a massive productivity boost in my studies.

I feel no reason to purchase further upgrades, because I've yet to want to play a game that I can't max out on this sytem, and that's the only demanding thing that this PC does.

That said, I'd like it to be (even) quieter, so I might be looking at a new case at some point. I'm also about to get a load more free second-hand hardware off a mate (in return for selecting and assembling a PC for him), most of which I will Ebay, but some of which constitute some small upgrades for me

Re: What do you do with your PC?

My world would shut down if my PC broke. I use it for pretty much everything.

Communications

Web scripting, design, photo-editing

Music - all my music is on my PC

Movies - Blurays, MKVs, YouTube etc etc

Converting files to upload to my smartphone.

Learning & training - languages and professional development

Gaming - Fairly high end stuff, I like to game at 1080p with everything turned up.

I'm getting to the point where the PC isn't quite up to maxxing my games. I'm definitely interested in the upcoming GTX660 to replace my 460. I am also wondering whether it's time to upgrade the CPU infrastructure. I don't think my CPU is presently maxxed in any game I play but would the bus/memory speed etc make a noticeable difference to game performance?

comments welcomed here Benefits of Upgrading a System Architecture

I'm a bit worried about derailing the thread if I respond to that here :P

I'd love to answer the same question in the Randomness Ressurected thread though

Re: What do you do with your PC?

When I'm at home, I'm on the PC 99 44/100% of the time. I rarely turn on any of the TV programs anymore.

The PC is my communications device, entertainment, business, and pretty much anything you can think of is what I do with my PC.

When I'm away from the house, at my job, and running errands, I depend on my smartphone to keep me in touch with what's going on.

AND, I read a physical newspaper every single day. (Well, at least I BUY one every day but sometimes things get so busy I may not be able to read it until later. I've been known to sit and read 3 days' worth of newspapers at one sitting. )

Re: What do you do with your PC?

I do web browsing and a little gaming on my PC, mainly. I used to do more, but now I do my programming on the work's PC (or rather, Mac), and don't have that much time at home.

Re: What do you do with your PC?

Same as most people here, use diffrent machines depending on what i'm doing

Work: a mighty pentium 4 (all its used for is running terminal sessions and email tbh)

Home: gaming PC (in the system specs) used solely for Battlefield 3! Macbook is used for everything else, surfing, email, photo editing.

On the move: iPad or iPhone for email an surfing, and the occaional random game.

GF can mean excercise, but it doesn't always. Similarly, excercise needn't always mean GF. So it's worth noting both.
