PC not recognizing additional dvd burner

I am working on a Dell Dimension E520 running Vista Home Premium with 2GB ram. I installed an new DVD drive in addition to my old dvd burner so I could copy from one to the other.It powers up and opens, but Explorer doesn't recognize it. I went into the bios and it shows SATA 4, controler ser ARA, driver ID = unknown for the new one.
What am I missing? Thanks

First, make sure any cables are properly and securely connected;

2nd, go into Device Manager and run the Check for New Hardware option;

3rd, right click on "Computer", Manage, then click on Disk Management. Let it detect your drives and see if it shows up there.

Re: PC not recognizing additional dvd burner

A couple of things come to mind:

First, make sure you have the latest motherboard/chipset drivers for your motherboard installed. Check the Dell site for any updates.

Second, if you disconnect the "working" burner and only connect the "new" one, does it work? (And, are both of them SATA optical drives?)

Re: PC not recognizing additional dvd burner

Again, thanks for the help...I was finally successful by doing what you suggested and updated the MB drivers. I replaced the old dvd into the original sata port and then installed the new one into another sata port available..re-booted and it recognized both...thanks so much!
