Media server?
First and foremost, hello to everyone here.
Now I'm not sure where I should post this, but hope this is correct ![]() I'm working onboard a ship and we presently have a Synology DS209 acting as a movie server. All our movies are mkv rips and this unit seems to have done very well for us. We are now in the market for an upgrade and I was thinking of moving up to the DS411. At around $340 this is within our budget. We already have 4 2TB drives ordered so this seems to me to be a reasonable route to take. I would really appreciate anyones thoughts on this and if they think I should be approaching this in another way. I'm looking to give only certain users access, as not everyone is willing to contribute to the cost. Our network onboard is a 1GB and we are using reasonably high end Cisco switches. I expect the usage of this system to be around the 3 to 4 people online at anyone time streaming. Maybe increasing to 10 dependant max. Will this unit be able to do this I guess is my question Probably overkill, but then overkill isn't always a problem when it comes to technology.Well looking forward to reading a few or a lot of responses. |

Re: Media server?
Seems fine to me. I had a look up of the specs and I can see that it supports over 2000 user accounts, disk quotas and the like. Limiting simultaneous streaming, I can't say. Given the management features available, it seems likely that you could do something similar.
The alternative would be to use a Windows system for the file shares, maybe an mATX system? That'll do everything you're after too.
