X79 Extreme9 RAID
I think I know the answer to this but I thought I'd ask.

On this motherboard it says that RAID 5 is supported on the two Intel SATA-III ports but RAID 5, to my knowledge, requires a minimum of 3 harddrives.

Is it just that the RAID 5 tech is there, despite the lack of physical capabilities or would it actually work?

raid 5 is supported.. you just need to attach 3 drives... it includes all 6 of the sata ports... NOT just the 2x SATA III Ports....

You can raid 0/1/0+1/5 and i think 10 (but why 10 lol) across all 6 ports... i know i have.

So it works across the different controllers? So two in one controller, one in the Intel?

I'm considering 3x 2TB WD Reds in 5 for long-lasting storage. I don't back up so that's why I fancied the redundancy.

There are 6 ports for the intel ICH10R system.... 2 of which are SATA III and the other 4 are SATA II.. right?

All 6 are controlled by the same controller... it's just that only 2 are sata II due to the ICH10R not being up to date enough to handle more than 2 SATA III devices at full speed.. actually i'd go as far to say that it barely handles 2 SATA III devices (SSDs)

Although there is a pile of SATA ports on it, the first 6 should be ICH10R... and the last 6 are i believe the other Marvelle SATA controllers.

Yeah, the black ports are SATA 2 and the grey ports are SATA 3, but the top six are all from the same controller. You might as well just plug the Raid 5 HDDs into the black ports (there'd be no advantage to having some of them in faster ports), and keep the grey ports for your SSDs or other fast drives (Intel SATA 3 ports are generally faster than Marvell ones).

Somehow, I got it into my head that only two of the SATA-II ports were Intel. Don't ask how. Using the SATA-II ports will suffice.

Which would make more sense given the colour scheme. In this case, you want these ones (bold underline):

it'd be nice if asrock has color coded things more clearly... many of Asus's boards clearly has the intel SATA II (4x) sata ports one color.. .the intel SATA III (2x) sata ports another.. and then the 3rd party controller ports yet again individually colored depending on which controller they are using.

Carrying on from this topic, I got an email through today that made me question the value of a Red.
At the moment I can get 2TB Reds for £93. For £99 I could get a 3TB Seagate Barracuda.

Ordinarily, I'd go straight for the 3TB but I'm after long-term here. Reds win hands-down for power consumption and NAS drives so this might seem a silly question but I'd like opinions. I'm also not intending to use these drives in a NAS.

Which one comes recommended for my needs?

i'm not to happy with the large capacity seagate drives.... there pauses and idle...responce times and overall throughput can touch the 2tb reds i have.... you have to pay quite a bit to get something more comparible....
