Default Post how to remove "for testing purposes only" from your desktop (beta sp1 related)

basically right click on your desktop and hit properties

choose the desktop tab click on the customize desktop button

click on the web button and check Lock Desktop Items.

Press ok then press Apply in the main screen

Only problem is this means you lose icon transparencies

oO notice the 2 areas in the photo I have circled in white.

the icons on the top one have transparent shadowing (only for the Windows Media Player File Icon and the Trash Icon. All three however have
transparent text background enabled)

Now in the bottom picture as you can see the testing text has disappeared but if you look at the icons the transparent text background is now disabled so
the background there is gray (the default windows background color for XP) and now instead of having the transparent shadows on the WMP file icon you
can see a black line underneath it that was only a light gray in the top picture (yeah I know the pics are small......had to resize for our 56k users ). And
also look closer at the trash icon. See the 2 odd shapes to the left and right......look at the top picture now.......they arent there....
another use of subtle shadowning that XP allows when in standard mode to give icons a more real feel

Download The Registry Detective from the link above, once installed it
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3001-2094-5943284.html
do a search for the word TESTING and delete the two keys found and you can go back to your normal desktop.
Of course I wouldn't try the sp1 Beta or any other experiments if I didn't have a Ghost Image file which brings everything back to as it was in about 5 min.
Regards, Jerry

Ok Folks lets go through this again
Repeat all the steps above, for those of you who doesn't really want to delete them
Highlight the keys found by the reg detective click on file and export them to somewhere
in your hard drive and name them as sp_1 and sp_2 and than delete them
this way if a complication arises you can always import them with regedit by clicking file and export it
Renaming it won't do.
Regards,
Jerry

I always have build number display enabled anyway. Nothing wrong with a beta warning on your desktop

The reg detective will find two keys, highlight each one and press Ctrl and R this will take you to the registry automatically, and yes you will have to delete the folder itself on the right side of the vertical divider which has File ,Edit,Wiew,Favorites ,Help( on top menu)
Once you highlight the keys found by reg detectiveand press Ctrl and R the folder will be the only open folder on the registry tree (the right side of the divider) look for an open
folder right click on it and first export if desired, and after that right click and delete

Jerry

Cool- it worked! I had deleted the two keys, but had read nothing about deleting the folders they were in. Once I did this and restarted the build number's gone from the desktop. Thanks for your help!

jerry, I have no problems finding the keys. I found them both manually. I see no need to d/l and run any regdetective to find the keys for me. It makes no sense that it can only be disabled by d/ling and using the regdetective to find those keys and then change them. A changed or renamed reg key is a changed or renamed reg key. whether with a "find it" program or doing it manually....

You can just delete it. From what I've read it's only in the leaked Microsoft internal builds. It's mean to report back to Microsoft internally to say that the beta installed correctly. If the beta install wasn't installed correctly then a followup e-mail is sent out, also internally. From what I gather none of this is sent over the internet anyways. It's made to make sure that their own testers at Microsoft aren't having any problems or something like that.

Default Post Reg Det

Shuki, you are absolutely right there is no need to download the reg det and the keys can
be found and deleted without it, that is of course if you have the extra time to do it
I have an 80 Gig hard drive and still against downloading every other download that tere is
but the reg det takes less than 1 MB space and it is free and it makes your life a lot easier
I really dont know who wrote it and put it on the net for free but my hat goes out to him
try to do the search with reg edit itself time it and search again with reg det and see the difference.
as I Posted before renaming it won't do have to delete it

Jerry

removes it in less than a second! Reboot & be happy.

Very nice batch file but I always am happier when I solve my own problems, even if it takes
some reg digging

You can not build unless you dig first, which luckily enough for them the digging for our pals in U.K was done here in this forum
Yesterday at one point there were more than four different XP sites pointing everybody
to DriverHeaven forum and this thread for the specific "testing Purposes" only issue
and only after the reg keys were posted in this thread time and again, our pals in U.K came up with the batch file, jolly interesting!!
I believe the purpose of discussion forum is to learn something for everybody
which it happened perfectly, here yesterday .
A batch file makes your life easy but it doesn't really teach you anything
After all who is going to give us a batch file for everything we need
the answer is Mr Gates! and the rest is history.

When the going gets easy the tough don't go !
