MAXIMUM temperature or maximum performance, you got two different questions lol....
I'm not exactly sure about the temperature but I'd say dont let it go over 55C. AND as for performance, it depends on your PSU, MOBO, RAM, and type of XP1700. People have pushed it up as far as 2.5GHz on aircooling, which is what I will be trying to do when I get my new NF7-S 2.0 and GeiL PC3500 2x256MB DDRAM.

Max possible temp is 90C...... But don't let it go over 50-60C.....

well, it seems that i have a problem then.
i checked it in the morning, and after my PC had been on for over 15 hours, the CPU temperature was 63-63 degrees C. now, what should i do with it?? oh, and also it seems that i don`t have a system fan or it`s not turned on, cause i guess every PC-case has one. how do i turn it on? |

What heatsink are you using? The one that came with the processor?

In the computer world its called a heatsink. Are you using thermal paste or a pad? IF you put paste on your temps will drop ALOT.

well, you should be lucky you`ve been given all this graet knowledge at the moment of your birth!!!
don`t expect all the people to be so smart!!!! i`m not much into computer-building and overclocking, just worried if my CPU i sno too hot. plus, i ain`t english nor amercian and simply don`t understand what you guys mean by pad or paste. if you were really all that clever, you`d just try to explain the difference to me instaed of making such silly remarks. |

ok man you need to take that raditor.....or heatsink...which ever you perfer, go to the local computer store....buy thermal paste..i would get AS3 but what you get is up to...then go home and take the thermal paste and put it on the heatsink....do not put a lot on there....just enough to cover the core..." core is the shiny rectangle in the middle of the cpu..." and make fairly thin...then put you heatsink back on and check temps

I have to say that I am a little dissapointed in the direction and tone of this thread. Not everyone is from the US or the UK, guys, and we ought to show a little more respect towards others. People don't all refer to things the same way as we do. When a member says he has a radiator with a propeller on it, don't give him a hard time -- you know he's talking about what we call a heatsink. Not everyone is as knowledgable as you all are, and when someone posts a thread to LEARN, you ought to be glad to oblige.
Now, then, adalek, I'm sorry about all that. As was discussed above, most people online refer to what you are calling a radiator as a heatsink. A heatsink is a piece of metal that helps dissapate the heat produced by your CPU. Now, the heatsink that came with your processor (called a "stock heatsink") should be good enough to cool your CPU. However, buying a better heatsink isn't a bad idea. Stock heatsinks are rarely very good; there are other ones that do a much better job. The cooler you keep a CPU, the longer it will last. Secondly, the "pad" the everyone has been refering to is a material that is usually pre-installed on heatsinks. You usually need to have something between your CPU and heatsink to help transfer heat. However, the "pad" (usually pink) that is found on most CPUs usually is of pretty low quality, and does not perform very well. Most PC enthusiasts scrape the pad off and use thermal grease instead. It does a much better job of transfering heat. NEVER use both. If your 1700+ is running above 60C, something is wrong. Try improving the airflow of your case by adding fans and bundling wires. Also consider buying a better heatsink and replacing the thermal pad with thermal grease. Thermal pad: Thermal grease: PS: Both of those pictures show heatsinks cooling chipsets, not CPUs. But the concept is the same. |

We should be happy people want to come here and ask questions, even if they are new to PC's. Maybe he heard this was a good place to come and people wouldn't make fun of him. I knew exacly what he was talking about when he said rediator and propeller. Pretty good discription actually. Hope we didn't scare him away.

ok... everything JavaFox said is true... but what i did notice is that he didnt refer you to anything. Now i am not assuming anything (well i guess i am...) but since you are not from the US or UK i guess you probably dont have a computer store around... or a very good one at least. Like i said you may... but still.
this is a popular hsf (Heatsink/fan): the Volcano 9 from www.outpost.com for $25... http://shop1.outpost.com/product/3436723 If you aren't interested in overclocking then this is a GREAT hsf for you! Now for thermal grease... http://shop1.outpost.com/product/3251241 this is some top of the line thermal grease... now if you want a bigger amount and are willing to spend twice as much then http://shop1.outpost.com/product/3252701. Now mind you... i have no idea how much the shipping will be to get to your country... but i think they ship to nearly all countries so there you go. If you are willing to buy and you really do want good cooling then i suggest that combo. I am sure better heatsinks will be posted on here after me though. |

no offence taken.
thank you for your support and great piece of advice. i checked on the amd web site and it read that 60-65 degrees C is a normal temperature level for my Athlon. but, as you said, the cooler the better. maybe better air flow inside the case should help a bit?? and maybe cleaning the radiator wouldhelp as well?? i also have a problem with this forum. i can only post from work and when i try to post from home, i get the info i can`t post cause my profile has been blocked by administrator. what the hell? |

Could you post a screenshot of the error message in the feedback forum. I'm on holiday tomorrow so one of the other admins will probably investigate further

I think max 60 can be harsh, I let mine run at around the 60 mark in hot weather and have never had a AMD chip run below 45 without cpu idle software. Currently I have a very expensive multi speed fan on my cpu at medium speed which is 5000rpm and when installed I used thermal paste on the chip, with the outside temp around 28-30 celsius my chip was running at approx 64 celsius, now its 2am and things have cooled down it is now at 56 celsius, my pc has not crashed with this hardware yet, I feel higher temps may well reduce the life of your chip but in all probability the chip will be replaced with 2 years of purchase anyway.
This is just my take on things. |
