DVD nichts gut Problem SONY 500 DRU

My Sony 500DRU (bios 501f) which I use moderately has started playing up. It started to have problems reading DVD movies and now it will only find the movie in one out of twenty tries.
Cleaned it and re-installed drivers etc. Prob seems to have arrived shortly after a few XP hotfixes and new DX 9.0b. Unless anyone is having similar or knows a solution I guess I'll have to try a system restore which will be a nuisance

I noticed I've only one more region selection left. There should be three left.
It reads CDs and writes to em no trouble.

Meanwhile my two "cheap as chips" generic DVD drives in other two PCs are working wonders as usual. Annoying isn't it?

This has been a known problem w/ this model for awhile now. Not really much you can do about it than to pray for a firmware upgrade that will fix it,

I did suspect as much. I'm off to check for a revision. Though SONY has probably shelved the 500 by now...........

How is it burning though?
