It's been pretty much hashed out, but some people still don't believe that Nvida has any optimizations for UT2k3 on the GFFX. Really.

Any exactly how are you going to notice the "harsh mipmap transitions" when you're running around a 16 player deathmatch at top speed???

Image quality is so subjective, and hell, if you can't notice a difference using "quasi-trilinear" filtering...then who cares?

Your point is well-taken, but I think the problem here is that both manufacturers advertise that they use trillinear filtering even though, as I understand it, they don't. It is bad form. Would you not complain if you bought a P4 2.4C only to find that, despite what it says on the box, it doesn't support Hyperthreading? Of course you would. Would you be able to tell the difference? Probably not. So how is that different?

My friend just bought a Gainward golden sample and it doesn't advertise trilinear filtering at all (unless I'm missing it)...or do you mean "advertising" through reviews sites and such?

I guess my point is, if it still looks good, and performs well, who cares if it's not done to a multi-year old standard algorithm? ATI did DX9 shaders differently than nVidia...so what? They both have their own method of anisotropic filtering...so what?

Honestly, I've dealt with computers for 11 years, and I've owned everything from a ATI128, Voodoo1, Riva TNT, Geforce 1,2, and 3 to an ATI Radeon 8500 and I've seen the new Geforce FX 5900 Ultra in action compared to a Radeon 9800 Pro (on a BEAUTIFUL cornerstone trinitron 22 incher)...there is hardly any discernable difference between the dang things!

I'm also the guy that found every misaligned texture in Halflife...I make all my website images meticulously perfect...I'm not just some buffoon on the street...to me, image quality in games at their videocards' highest settings is identical between the two.

End of rant coming up soon!

My final point is this, if it looks great, plays great, and doesn't give you an STD...by all means, don't knock it!

(as a final note, my brother has the radeon now and my friend uses the fx...doom 3 has never looked so good! meanwhile, I've decided to wait as long as possible before making a new computer...relegating me to a geforce 3 ti500 on an aging 1.7ghz P4...sigh...at least unreal 2 runs really well...I hope I can hold out 'till halflife 2...sigh...that looks so -RENO HAS BEEN PUNCHED FOR RAMBLING

I think ATI looks better than Nvida to me. When I got my 9700pro and started playing games at full quality settings (because my it4200 couldn't handle it - even at 315/600) I could not believe the difference in quality. Even antialiasing looks better on the ATI. 2x looks like Nvidia's 4X to me, and the quality setting in Aniso is soo much better on ATI. I can really tell the difference.

Yup, i totally agree! hey, my previous card was ti42008X (@290/600) too, with AA and AF turned off, i can really feel the difference but not that obvious though, you have to look very closely...............anyway, i think that Nvidia has improved a lot in IQ on their 5900 series...everyone's improving~LOL
