Big Grin New Computer!!!!

Actually, it's more like a major upgrade. I know it's not top of the line, but it's gonna be a thousand times better than what I've got now. I ordered the parts tonight.

Here's what I'm getting.. be happy for me.

Epox EP-8RDA+
512 MB PC2700 Corsair DDR (one stick... I'll buy another later)
Antec SL400 400W Power Supply
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (retail)

to go along with what I already have:
ATI AIW 8500DV (64 MB)
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2
3COM network card
120 GB Maxtor HDD
40 GB Maxtor HDD
16x Pioneer slot loading DVD-ROM (105S)
16x10x40 Yamaha CD-RW
generic floppy drive

Grand total: $330

I'm so happy right now.. I can't wait!!! Many thanks to those of you who recommended me motherboards. It was a tough choice between the 8RDA+ and the NF7-S, but in the end the 8RDA+ seemed to suit me better and it was nearly $40 cheaper, so that's good, too.

Everything was shipped UPS 2-day ground (total for shipping was only $7!!), so I should get it early next week, I think. (UPS doesn't ship on the weekends, if I remember correctly)

I so can't wait. I'll have to post some before/after benchmarks when I get everything setup.

I said benchmark, not 3DMark.

I figured I'd do the whole Quake 3 (just for kicks), Jedi Knight 2, UT2k3, and MAYBE some synthetic benchmarks. I don't really like 3DMark too much.. it's boring to watch.

Let me know how you like that 8RDA+. I'm mulling over getting that over an A7N8X non-Deluxe and saving about $12 for a friend's computer...really tight budget.

Okay, so I got everything put together (ran the vacuum to suck the dust out of my case), and it booted first try! Yay!

So I boot from my XP+SP1 CD and start to install Windows. It gets all the way to the end, where it starts Windows for the first time. Reboot. "Windows did not start up properly last time", or something like that. Try again. It hangs after it initializes the video (after the monitor "clicks") then restarts. Try safe mode. It starts up and tells me Windows recovered from a critial error dealing with the video drivers. Hmm..

I tried to install new video drivers from safe mode, but that didn't work. So I dug out my real Windows XP CD (without SP1) and reinstalled again. This time no problems. Weird.

Anyway, it's up and running, but I've still got a lot of work to do.. tons of programs to reinstall, lots of tweaks to reapply... but I'm gonna have a good weekend!

As soon as I get the computer up and running how I want it, I'll rebenchmark it and post the results. I think they're gonna be funny.. (I ran 3DMark03 for the hell of it before I got my new stuff and scored somethink like 700 3DMarks )

Very nice indeed. The Barton 2500+ is indeed very popular. It's almost the only thing I see in peoples rig spec.

Although updating your Radeon 8500 would be nice if you're a gamer. So that it won't be a bottleneck for your system.

Again, Congrats!!

Well XP is just a name for the processor brand. It's Barton that's the name of the core type.
Before Barton it was Thoroughbred. And Palomino before that.

There are both Barton and Thoroughbred processor which have the XP trademark

That will be my next upgrade, but upgrading it right now would have nearly doubled my cost, so I held off. I take comfort in knowing that my video card actually IS the bottleneck now, rather than my CPU as was the case before upgrading.
