I just read this at Guru and had to post it. Predictions are that this new chip in the making, Named the CELL. Will Calculate roughly 1 trillion mathematical calculations per second, roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz.
Thats Awwwesome. Read here

Sony is part of the engineering along with toshiba and IBM. But I cant really see a playstation needing that. Nobody needs that. It's insane. I cant even immagine what the rest of the system that was built to run it would be.

i guess i'm eight
don't know how to take that.depends on what your intentions are.i were a little suprised to see that myslf a cpu speed like that for a console is asking a lot of dosh.consider it this way the xbox in my opinion is far superior to the ps2 & that has an equivilent to a p3 733mhz cpu. |

Can I be 13?
That does seem like an awfull lot of power for a console. Why the hell would it need it? |

The cell design orginally came from IBM.... they had the info on it out first.... then people jump on the wagon and is helping produce it.... i understood that amd is working also along side ibm in the format..... It's a 3D CPU ..... it's not layed out flat and built...but built with layers in mind....and alot fo cells put together... (or so i understood from the images and writeup i read a good long time ago)

I wonder if this CPU will be able to render Virtual Reality?? Or at least something close to it. A CPU like that in a gaming console will force the game companies to finally make games worth looking at......at almost movie quality. This can only be a good thing!!

I heard that playstation 3 probably wasn't going to be able to use cell, that it's way too far advanced right now.

Playstation 3 is supposed to be BASED on CELL. It will use a modified (economized) version.

And of course the PS3 will probably be SEVERELY limited on RAM. They love to do that.

PS3
well, as all i heard from SONY, PS3 are network consoles, thus they can form arrays and share their CPU time, just like SETi@home. I guess that speed was estimated based on the biggest array it can form. Maybe between 50-100 consoles together via giga ethernet or optical network.
Also, P4 is a 32bit processer but Dreamcast, Gamecube and PS2 are now using 128bit processer already... I guess cell is a 256bit or even 512bit processer, possibily 256bit w/ extremely large full speed cache (around 1-2MB), and operating w/ a 512bit GPU |
