Why not 128 bit?

With Intel and AMD soon coming out with 64 bit processors, I wondered why not 128 or 256 bit? I mean, doesnt a Radeon 9800 have 256 bit interface, and like Dreamcast + have 128 bit processors. If you were going to make a change, why not leap instead of step? I think I am missing something here, but dunno what is wrong with my reasoning but I figured it couldnt hurt to ask.

On another note, how much will things have to change for consumers to accept 64 bit processors? Microsoft said its 64 XP wouldnt be able to handle 32 bit operations as well because it has to emulate it? How many things are based on the bits? eg. do all games need to be written differently for 64 bit or could they automatically be used in 64 and the bits dont matter for this stuff.

I dunno what the difference between bits are, Im just rambling im tired
