Sad Maxtor HDD crashed :'(

Hello,
First of all my hdd specs. Its a Maxtor 30GB 7200RPM DiamondMax plus 8 (date 19jan2003)

Yesterday i reboot my pc, and boom.... HDD failer... After some try-ing of reconnecting etc the hdd starts make strage sounds... Everytime you heard tick, tick, tick, tick... After again a lil time it strats make some kind of bleeping sound, what i am not sure of if its a alarm sound, or a sound what the hdd makes cuz somethin is not workin good (the lazer i think try's read whole time, but get kicked back)...

At the time it happend, i was re-installing my server, so i hadn;t any back up of my origional pc, so all my data is lost. And on the hdd is very very very much things what is very (personal) important to me. So 1 way or the other, i need that back...

My hdd is not detected anymore by my pc, and i can send it back to maxtor and get a new one, cause its only 6 months old. But this way i wont ever get the data back. So i am looking for other ways how to ever get my data back.

What i would like to know if there is some 1 who know's if this can be repair (by me, or at some company, or maybe even a member of this board who can do it?) Any help is 10000 percent welcome and VERY appreciated!

Tnx and greetz a desperad Saint K.

P.s. Sorry for the bad english sometimes!

data recovery is pacetakeing and quite expensive asuming you have any data left the cliking noises are most likely you hdd heads hitting the platters.... better know as the click of death....

I have had some HDs to go bad, but, in most cases, I was able to retrieve data from them via DOS. That's if the HD is even detected at all.

Some HD Data Retrieval sources say that putting the HD in the freezer (wrapped in airtight plastic) -- and leave it there for several hours -- will sometims allow the HD to become detected long enough to retrieve data...but you have to work fast enough that the HD doesn't become too hot again.

I had a link a while back to a site that offered several options to get a bad HD to work long enough for this purpose.

One of the things they mentioned was actually taking a hammer and rapping the HD enough to dislodge the reading device from the head. That's if the thing has become welded to the head. That likely, however, would void any warranty or option of getting a new HD if there's any physical damage done to the casing. Others have said to remove it from the computer and drop it from a short distance from above the desk onto the top of the desk. That, too, may dislodge anything that's stuck.

In any case, if you CAN get it working enough to retrieve your data, definitely get a new one.

BTW, a report not long ago mentioned that the 30 - 40 and even 60 GB 7200 RPM HDs are among the most likely to go bad. The reason was focused on a bad bearing system that becomes overheated.

Good luck!

It's always the Maxtor 30's. I had the same problem a while back. I was gonna send it to OnTrack Data Recovery but it was too expensive (~$700) so I just started over and hopefully someday I can get my data recovered from that drive. But, by now I have most of what I had on there anyways.

Many of the Maxtor DMP 8 series had problems... overheating of the bearings is actually a common failure with most high speed "dry bearing" systems.

Maxtor recently began using a liquid bearing that is MUCH cooler, reliable, and has a tendancy to be quieter...

I have been using the Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 Ultra series (these are the drives with the liquid bearings, and 8MB of cache) for almost a year (they are 80GB hard drives) and I have not heard a peep from them.

Good luck with your project... a failed hard drive is always a pain.

I had a similar problem with my old Maxtor 80 GB. To get around it I removed the HD from the computer. Held it in my had so that the back of the drive was facing towards me but with the drive on its side. Shook it briskly a couple of times like I was shaking somebodies hand. After this the HD worked for a few days allowing me to copy any needed data off it. I then RMA'ed the drive back to Maxtor. Hope this helps.

My maxtor died the same kind of death...of much longer..... it took a few months... sometimes the HD would Make a weird BLEEP alarm sound... sometime the computer wouldn't see it or would say HD failer.... i held off till i knew a trip was ready to go to the store...... that day, started it up... moved the file over.. and then headed back.... i just found it odd the it was completely working sometimes...and not others....

Oh shi... I have two of the DMP8s, 80gbers, in a hot condition, non-liquid-bearings I think I'll go put a fan on those.

Sorry to hear that, Saint_K, I'm in the same situation with an IBM HDD.

It wouldn't boot, I just get a "read data error" message, then nothing. I put it in another computer, and, surprise, one of the partitions is still accessible. Not all of it, it appears that some bad sectors have appeared, but some of the files could be retrieved.

I found an utility on the IBM site that did a lot of tests and found some bad sectors; I will probably have to low-level format, as the "sector repair" option seems to just hang.

For Maxtor, the equivalent utility would probably be Powermax but just in case browse starting from this page on the Maxtor site. You most likely need to take the HDD on another computer.

Good luck
