New HD. Have a concern.

Well, after having to RMA one 60GXP I'm anything but confident in it. Last night I went out and bought a WD 80GB 8mb cache drive to replace it as my primary. However, look at my benchmarks:

WD800JB - Sisoft: 25125
IBM 60GXP - Sisoft: 29131

WD800JB - HDTach: 13.1ms
IBM 60GXP - HDTach: 12.1ms

According to sisoft, I should be getting around 31000 in the file system benchmark. My 60GXP is kicking the WD800JB all over the place. What's going on?

System Specs:

MSI K7T266 Pro2-RU
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
Kingston 896mb PC2100
Visiontek GF4 Ti4600
VIA Hyperion 4.48
Microsoft Windows XP SP1

Your 60GB hard drive was probably using one 60GB platter. The 80GB WD's use two 40GB platters, making it slower.

That might be it, but also remember HDD scores don't only depend on the HDD . . . The motherboard chipset, and the IDE drivers, both affect scores too. He has a KT266, and I bet you have something newer . . . .

Sure... I have an KT266a but you'r right could be many things, indexing service comes to mind, another (older) Hd/CD on the same controller, or the jumper on the HD itself

I appreciate the feedback. A few things:

1.) I have been building, troubleshooting, and obsessantly working with and on computers for the past 7 years. I have experience to solve problems.
2.) I've tried various VIA drivers including 4.38. 4.43, and 4.48 all yielding the same results.
3.) I'm running the latest BIOS.
4.) I just formatted again and installed Windows 2000 w/ SP4. No change.
5.) I have benchmarked with my IBM drive hooked up and without it hooked up (WD800JB being primary, 60GXP being secondary). No change.

The conclusions I came to is this:

1.) Either I have acoustic management on (sisoft says it's off but sandra often lies )
2.) It's my motherboard (chipset. etc.)

I'm going to check to see acoustic management is infact on using the hitachi/ibm utility. I'll let you all know what happens.

Here is were we part, I'm using the driver of MS, not those from the VIA 44x .
What I do use is the PCI Latency patch.

Also Runnin on W2K & SP4 (NTFS)
Services disabled(manual) are(regarding the Hdd): indexing service, Log.diskman.(2x) Task Sch. & Removable StorageSystem.

MoBo = Shuttle AK32a
PSU = Q-tec 550 watt
Via drivers: 449p
mem = 2x 256mb_cl2.5 Hyund. DDR266mhz
Cpu = Amd Athlon 1600xp+
HD = WD- 800JB 80Gb - Seagate Barracuda ATA-IV 80Gb
Vid = Ati9700 driver: 2.4.74a (Omega)
OS = W2000 sp4 DX9b
Sound = Hercules FortissimoIII 7.1

I have the same settings...no change.

I've given up on the benchmarking part. The drive seems like it's running well, so I'm going to stop worrying about it.

Thanks for the tips.
