AMD CPUs advice?

I am considering buying a new system and I'd give AMD a shot...

The choices would be:

Thoroughbred FSB266 (2600 2.13GHz)
Thoroughbred FSB333 (2600 2.08GHz)
Barton FSB333 (2500 1.83GHz)

Other possible choices include 2000-2200 models stepping JIUHB, AIUCB, AIUHB. That would save up to 50$ on the first ones, but there is a risk that ocing doesn't work...

The mobo will most likely be GA-7N400-L1 (nForce2 Ultra 400) or Abit NF7-S V2.0, the second being some 50$ more expensive.

What would be your choice... any advice welcome.

Thanks

Barton 2500+, a very decent OCer and that extra 256K of cache comes in handy if you render images or encode A/V, it won't improve gaming though.

The abit mobo for sure if you are OCing. I hear the 2500+ is a great OCer, but any one of those AIUHB chips will hit atleast 2.4GHz very easily

I would go with the Barton 2500+ and the Abit NF7-S board...a perfect combination!

actually, rendering and encoding benefit very little from the Barton's extra cache, and games generally benefit slightly more . . . office apps seem to benefit the most. Linky: Anandtech

I recommend a 210 Palamino and a biostar... er... I mean..............

Seriously the 2500 Barton and the Abit Nf7-S are a great combo. Just look around here there are lost of people using that combo. Great speed and overclockability for the money!

Specifically, there are three reasons why you should take the Barton 2500+

1) Larger die provides more surface area to disappate heat.
2) Slower CPU clock allows for more overclockability.
3) It is well known that many Barton 2500+ CPUs are nothing more than relabeled (probably) 3000+ and 3200+ CPUs.

I'd actually go with the ABIT NF7-S 2.0 and the XP1700 Tbred-B DLT3C JIUHB 1.5V 0310 chip.

This motherchocker overclocks like its under ice, seriously.

I'm in love with this mobo and chip.

I would suggest the Barton 2500+ I have had mine running at 3200+ speeds at stock voltages with no problems... now... I am WAY above stock 3200+ speeds and climbing.

wow, that speed at default voltages? Is that more the exception, or the rule with xp2500?

well the 2500+ runs at 1.83GHz

which is 11x166 (333DDR)

the 3200+ runs at 2.2GHz

which is 11x200 (400DDR)

all you have to do to get a 2500+ to boot as a 3200+ is jump to a 200MHz FSB...

With stock voltages I was easily able to run at 2.3GHz

which was:

11.5x200, and I am now running at 12x210 ! ! ! !

need better cooling for my northbridge to maintain those speeds.. I have selected the microcool North Pole northbridge cooler for my next upgrade... that should be able to keep that hot running nForce2 Ultra400 northbridge nice and cool!

For the most part ... just about any 2500+ will overclock to a 3200+ on stock voltages... Seems that the 2500+ is just a downgraded 3200+ or something ... they overclock QUITE well...

Dont care.. My current 3DMarks are from a Radeon 9500 non pro ... so, if you beat them with something like a 9700 Pro, or a 9800 Pro ... you have not won squat! Good luck though ... because I promise... I will still have the best bang for the buck!

Hi
I'm running a 2400 on a Asus A7N8X Deluxe version 2 mobo with 512 of Mushkin level 2 black DDR 3200.
Win XP service pack 1 reports that I'm running and 1800 CPU, is that because it actually runs at that speed?

What would you recomend I do to keep the system running stable while making maximum use of the rig?
Do I need to update the bios or change settings?

I was thinking of changing the CPU heatsink for a quieter model as I find the standard one noisy, what would you recomend?

Thanks for any help
Sebastian

Hello Sebastian might I recommend that you post your own thread on the issues you have stated above. In doing so it will certainly help you get more specific Information to your questions. There is nothing wrong every once in a while to ask a question that may slightly differ from the main thread but if you want help it benefits you to make your own thread. That way you get dealt with specifially for your needs.

A quick note...

To say THANKS, people!

I am in big trouble right now... the old K6-2 went k-boom, so I thought what the heck, time for an upgrade anyway, and I started this thread... Thanks again, I really didn't expect it to grow that much

In the meanwhile, my main system crashed too, I am currently trying to salvage anything from the last IBM HDD I will ever have (1 yr 4 months old, just out of warantee). Hopefully some parts of this system are still intact (the K6 mainboard is gone, the PSU too).

There goes my upgrade, third attempt this year...

But I feel a lot more optimistic after reading this thread

The only HDDs I can find around here with 3 years warantee are the WD w/8MB cache ones.

Most older IBM IDE hard drives will come with a 3 year warranty. You should definitely call IBM's hard drive customer support service and find out if your hard drive is under warranty. However, I strongly suggest you avoid IBM hard drives if you ever buy a new one.

Western Digital only provides a 3 year warranty on their Special Edition 8MB-cache hard drives. It's worth the money though, and I would recommend WDSE hard drives any day to people looking for a new hard drive.
