Default Post RAM Where are you?

Ok, tobe honest I've never really noticed this problem until poking around with Cacheman today.

First off my specs.

Brains

CPU: Intel PIII 866
MOBO: Dell-branded board using Intel D815EEA
RAM: 512mb PC133

Display

Videocard: Geforce 2 Pro
Display: Dell 17-inch Trinitron

Storage

Hard Drive: WD 80gb 7200rpm, with 8mb cache
DVD-ROM: 12x
CD-RW: Creative 12x10x32x

Networking

Dial-Up: Diamond SupraMax 56k

Sound

Soundcard: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer
Speakers: Creative 2.1

Mouse
Microsoft Inteli Explorer 3.0

Keyboard
Dell-branded Microsoft Internet Keyboard

OS
Windows 98SE

Now the problem.

After booting up, according to Cacheman I have 380mb of my 512mb of ram free! After I run cacheman's memory recovery option I have 450mb free.

What is using up my memory??? Is there some program I can use, or setting that I can change that will free up more of my memory after I boot??

The only programs I have in my startup list are: SystemTray, POINTER, TweakUI, RivaTunerStartupDaemon, NvCplDaemon, and TweakUI auto logon.

Default Post That is weird.

I've got a similar set-up on Bubbles and she reports 443 free on boot for me. (I have the EXACT same start-up programs as you..)

A couple of strange thoughts/questions:

-How tweaked out is your 98se install? Did you disable active desktop & such?

-Does your PC take an excessively long time at any point during boot?

-DID YOU FREAKING LEARN YOUR LESSON ABOUT BUYING A BRANDNAME PC INSTEAD OF BUILDING YOUR OWN?!?! (Ahem...sorry, I just don't want to see you make that mistake a second time Dude. )

That is weird, have you ran any virus scans lately?

Tweak 98SE a lot. Active Desktop and all of that is disabled.

Boot is extremely fast no hang ups at all.

I'm stuck with my Dell for a long time. So I have to find a way to deal with it.

Don't have any anti-virus software installed. I've never really had problems with a virus before. I also run ad-aware, scan-disk, defrag etc... on an anual basis.

Any other ideas?

BTW - I actually had to read the damn WCIII instruction book. Couldn't figure how to get s**t out of my hero's inventory. I don't know what this has to do with this post but just felt like saying it.

DW can you recommend some Cacheman settings? Maybe my settings are configured goofy or something. Let me know.

Default Post Recomended Cacheman settings of mine

I run both rigs (320MB & 512MB, both 98se) in the "PowerUser" configuration of Cacheman 4.1 I didn't like 5 as much, it wanted me to decide too many things I wasn't sure about and 4.1 just seems to give me better results.

I used to run on "3D gamer" with "Conservative Swap-file Usage" checked, but I found "PowerUser" to give me pretty much the same gaming results but with better all around system performance.

If'n someone has some more/better input on Cacheman 5 I'd be more than willing to give it a go.
