Monitor recommendations

I'm looking to buy a CRT monitor in about two weeks or so... I am not interested in any LCDs, only CRTs.

I need some recommendations, suggestions, opinions on your monitor or monitors you have had experiences with.

Important is size, no less and no more than 18vis, a high resolution and high refresh rate also low price (nothing more than $250USD) and naturally a good name brand.

Please provide details, specs, links, screenies, etc.

Thanks, Dom.

Need to ask a few questions first so it can be narrowed down.

1. Color?

2. Shadow Mask or Aperture Grille?

3. dpi?

4. Highest Res. @ what refresh rate?

5. Analog, DVI or both?

6. Online or Local?

7. Flat or curved screen?

Samsung 19" SyncMaster 957mb

Samsung

It fits all of your criteria, and is the brightest, sharpest, ATI 9800 Pro loving monitor I have seen for it's money and much more.

I use 2 17" 763mb monitors on my system, my buddy liked them so much he bought the 19" 957mb......it looks better than mine .......but I have 2!!!

Seriously......this is a VERY bright vivid monitor.......you will love it when editing video, playing games, surfing, and editing pictures.

I was going to recommend Samsungs.... Excellent.. i'm not sure ..but are you talking 250US?

The SyncMaster 900IFT that i have is amazing.... 1920x1440x32 @ 65 hz isn't to bad.... considering a dpi of 0.20

Thing is, it's been good while since i bought this.. 2 years now i think....

They have a newer model(s) out now that can do the same.... with much higher HZ.... might want to look at samsungs site thoroughly.....

My monitor came with a USB setup... which i haven't looked into to much....but just now remembered it...

ALSO, it has some rather nice options on it.... if you have a dark document you looking at or editing or a game..that's overall dark... and you want to lighten it without washing it out... the monitor has a quick "HIGHLIGHT" feature... must say, alot better then playing with the monitor settings while you get fraged.... It can be adjusted to do whatever you want... .size of it... sharpness... it's like another set of seperate monitor configurations..... Not to hard to read and setup.... although a tad heavy... not to large depth is excellent....

Then theres the 900NF which gives you a rather HIGH HZ at those same reses...but dot pitch is 0.24

Seeing a game with AA at 1280x1024 on the 900IFT is amzing... but you should play UT at 1920x1440.... and be TRULY AMAZED...

With the "MB" series you have a single button called "Magic Bright".......

Text..........Internet.......Entertainment

If you use a simple program to get the initial color and brightness correct, you can then use the single button to take care of the brightness without any wash out or color loss what so ever........and some of the brightest whites you will ever see. It reminds me of my Sony 53" TV with it's setting's for sports, movies, and whatever the other one is. Only my DVD's have a bit brighter whites on my Samsung CRT.

I strongly recommend anything with an apeture grille (not shadow mask), as I find the quality on these, especially the Trinitron monitors, to be equivalent to an LCD or significantly better. I have a Sony Trinitron P991, 19", .25 dot pitch, looks better than any LCD I've seen at this size Excellent in all aspects except weight - it has about a centimeter of glass in the front, so its about 60 lbs or so. Refurbished P991s back from lease from Dell sometimes go for $100, and have a good warranty and the same quality. One note though is that they have two small wires going across them. They aren't noticable, really, unless you are looking for them or if you have a flat white background up and are looking the right place.

I could probably recommend the one Toshiro mentioned . . . I have the P1130, and I expect the P991 would just be a smaller version, with the same beautiful display.
Tosh, mine says it's 67 lbs in the manual, but it felt more like 80, lifting it out of the box

I've also heard good things about this monitor (Vengeance has one.)

Whatever you get, I do suggest you get one with a flat screen Trinitron (or Diamondtron, etc) CRT.
They just look so much better than traditional CRT's (The damper wires are really not that noticeable)

I wanted a P1130, but the P991 was on sale by $200 and the P1130 wasn't I've seen em though, and the P991's actually look a bit better as far as colors go in my opinion I think mine is actually only 50 lbs, but I normally lug it around with my random cr4p attached to the monitor (clipboard/light), and with that it weighs about 65lbs One thing to note is that the monitor is a bit wierd for games - in some games without enough gamma correction, you need to turn the brightness up from an optimal 10 or so to 50 to get the most subtle of black shadings for dark levels/maps/etc. For normal use, though, 50 is way too high and 10 is optimal. Just a 5 second thing to do sometimes if you're in a dark game, but also something to keep in mind.

EDIT: Wrong preposition.

EDIT: www.merkortech.com is a place I've heard good things and bad things about (check resellerratings, about a 7.5), but they have monstrously good pricing on refurbished and reconditioned monitors, so if you want to go for something normally outside of your price range, I would suggest looking here. Appears to be down right now, possibly as a result of a worm. Check occasionally - perhaps don't order from them, but definitely take a look.

I have Samsung 959NF - awesome monitor, but I think it's not under the price you wanted
Still, check if prices got lower, I know the price about a year ago

Dom,

CompUSA has a 10% off Monitors sale starting today (Sunday, Aug. 24). There's an online AD you can download and print out to take with you if there's one of these nearby.

I posted in the Off Topics about it a few days ago.
