if you put in a music cd........click on my computer......then click on the drive that you put the music cd into.......if it wont recognize it.....sounds like some serious OS screw ups. I would suggest you do a fresh install of your OS, and get all the updates done. Your problem will go away as well as any other's you may have.

It is times like these that having a ghost back up image comes in handy.

Can you open the cd as if it were a data cd? Load the cd in the drive, goto "my computer" right-mouse-click on the cd drive and click on "Open." If you can do this, open Winamp and drag the .cda files into it to play them. If it's not a simple music cd there might be stuff on it (Audio tracks are at the front of the cd while data tracks are near the rear) for that you need a native cd player.... which you download here (5K!!).

Good luck!

DH is a place where people try to help each other the best that we can. If you dont like the response that someone gives to a question that you ask, it would be much appreciated if you would not insult there intelligence.

i dont think my response to be an insult, to the contrary, I wanted to tell the contributer to look for a solution not a " give-up" attitude. Imagine if every problem was accompanied with "fresh install", then none would be asking anything in this forum. Whoever had a problem anywhere on ones PC would always keep reformatting and making "fresh installation"...ha!
sorry if I did offend anyone

PangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nice

try the following 1st and see if it helps....

MS KB Q314096
If you can read a data compact disc but cannot play a music compact disc, use one of the following methods:
-- In Control Panel, start Sounds and Audio Devices, click the Hardware tab, and then make sure that the CD/DVD drive is listed, along with Audio Codecs.
-- If these items are not listed, use the Add/Remove Hardware program in Control Panel to reinstall these drivers.

I am a hardware/windows expert, as any of the crew on this site who knows me well can attest to, and I can tell you right now that sometimes a fresh install is just needed. Especially if there are too many issues like the one you are dealing with.

There are solutions that can work and sometimes all you can do is start from scratch.

Just a wild shot in the dark but the music CD you're trying to play isn't copy protected by something like Cactus Datashield is it? That is exactly what most PC's will say if you try to play one in a CD-Rom drive...They usually have awarning sticker somewhere that says 'will not play in a PC or Mac'

And before I get flamed to death, I know it is obvious, but usually problems are. I've lost count of the number of calls I've taken from users whose machines won't boot only to find they've left a floppy in the drive...
