Games keep crashing

I got the latest drivers for both my mobo and my graphics card, but my games keep crashing about five minutes into playing them, I have an AMD Duron ~800mHz and a GeForce FX 5600 with 320MB SDRAM.

Any help would be gratly appreciated.

You're going to need to give us more details.

Fresh copy of windows? Which Version of Windows?
What Motherboard, be more specific about your hardware.

Okay, my last question is, what card did you have before the FX? That may be what is causing the problems.

Very good job at collecting information, but I think it might be your PSU. Whats its rated at and what are your voltages?

Wow, you are really good at collecting information, but thats not what I was talking about. I ment the power supply.

Whats its wattage rating, and voltage measurements. (You can measure the volts by using a program like speed fan or motherboard monitor)

Heres a link to speed fans web site: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

And to motherboard monitors:http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

yeah, the program I used to get my info is available here: (I have the enterprise edition) http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32

and mbm 5 freezes on me everytime I try to start it up, I'll download the other one instead, and edit this post when I get the info.

EDIT:
I/O properly initialized
Linked ISA BUS at $0290
INFO: ENABLED VIA686 SMBus support
Linked VIA VT82C686 SMBUS at $EC00
Scanning ISA BUS at $0290...
Scanning SMBus at $EC00...
INFO : unable to use VIA686 sensors (bad I/O BASE)
SMART Enabled for drive 0
Found ST340823A (39.1GB)
End of detection

this is what it said? please tell me where to go in the program

EDIT#2: I clicked on Charts and did the drop down menu to voltages, but nothing is there... =\

I guess your mobo doesn't support reading voltages. Do you know the wattage rating and amp rating for your rails? It should say somewhere on the power supply.

I'm guessing you mean turning off my PC, and opening it up to look on the power supply, right? As in the part inside the PC, not the wall socket? Sorry, but I'm not really good at understanding everything on PC's yet, so sorry if I seem retarded with some of my questions...

Yeah the part inside your computer. I would reccomend you turn off the computer, but if you really need to leave it on you could probably be safe if your very careful when you have it open. The ratings will be right on the label on the PSU.

Don't feel retarded just because you aren't PC-wise. It just takes time to get to where it all makes sense to you , that's all. Asking these questions is the only way you'll ever learn anything.

Generally, if you take the side off the case (turn PC off first) you will see the Power Supply's info on a sticker attached to it. It will tell you the total wattage and the amps for each rail (12volt, 5volt, etc.) as well as the brand name of the PSU. This is the info required.

You'd be surprised at how often a Power Supply is the culprit that causes the PC to crash.

You should get a better PSU, that 12v rail is way too low. You want one with at least a 15amp 12 volt rail. You also want at least 350 watts total power output.

I think your new card is putting too much of a drain on your current PSU.

okay, can you tell me a good powersupply that will probably work with my current vid. card and is hopefull under $100? (the cheaper the better, but I also don't want my PC to catch fire...)

EDIT: if you could also provide me a place to purchase it that would be cool, and I only buy from stores, not online...

Thanks so much for helping me by the way!

www.pcpowerandcooling.com has the best power supplies IMO. You pay a permium for them though. Someone else might be able to help you better for buying a midrange PSU because I only know about pc power and cooling PSUs.

Yes, I'd say it's the PSU. The AMP rating on the 3.3, 5 and 12volt rails seem quite low.

Yours: (apparently a 250 watt PSU)
3.3 volt at 14 amps
5 volt at 25 amps
12 volt at 8 amps

Mine: (a 400 watt PSU)
3.3 volt at 28 amps
5 volt at 40 amps
12 volt at 12 amps

See what I mean?

It looks like you got a 250watt PSU. You need at least a 300 watt and I suggest 400watt or better (mine is an Antec 400watt and it's straining on the 12 volt side). You can never have too many watts. Your system appears to be starved for power. That will DEFINITELY cause things to crash.

Let's see....what are some good brands of PSU's? Unfortunately, ALL good ones tend to run about $100 or more.

Antec
EnerMax
......others? (somebody come up with some other brands to recommend)

EDIT: (couple posts since I started writing this)

Places to get PSU's....hmm....try to find a PC repair store around you. I don't do online either, but living in Cleveland, they are all over the place locally.

Is $69.95 US a good deal for a 400 watt PSU?

Hey Anachronox a PSU from Antec, Enermax or Sparkle will fix you up. I second the thought of getting at least a 400w PSU. Yes you want plenty of power but you also want a reliable and steady PSU. Even if you bought a 550w if the voltages fluctuated or were not steady then it would be not worth it. A PSU from any of these names would be a solid buy!
