EEK! Check HDD Drive for consistency? (Heeeelp!)

Ok, hear this.
Every time I start the pc I get a message that Drive F (one of the two partions on a WD 80 JB) needs to be checked for consistency. I have run checkdisk several times, finishing it with no errors, but it keep asking me to run checkdisk!!
Plus another issue that came up yestarday, when I removed one WD 40 BB that I had @ my system. The system boots up but after it asks me to run checkdisk, it doesn't proceed to the GUI. The monitor's lamp just goes to standby mode, while the HDD is still working
After I enter safe mode and unistall the grafic card's drivers, everything comes back to normal

I have an Athlon XP 2000+ cpu on a Gigabyte GA 7VA mobo (with VIA KT400)
80 Gb Western digital w/ 8 MB cache
GF4 MX 400 w/ 64 Mb DDR
PSU Deer 400 W

Any suggestions before I throw the pc from the window?

How much free space on each partition? What size clusters? NTFS? FAT32?

I have no proof to back this up but im hearing from some inside sources that alot of people are experiencing this continual scandisk on every restart, and was in fact caused by one of the MS updates. it doesnt effect every system but I can say ive also seen it myself on my 240 gig RAID, drive F constantly rechecking, its happened twice and ive had to move all files from that partition onto another one and then a reformat via diskmgmt.msc to solve it, then copy the files back.

If I find out anything further ill be sure to post.

Zardon, you may want to try the following if it happen again..

open CMD windows, type " fsutil dirty query F: " (no qoutes, change drive letter to the drive/parttion that you want to check)

it should come back with...
---------------------------------
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR NAME>fsutil dirty query F:
Volume - F: is NOT Dirty
-----------------------------------

if it comes back with "Dirty" or even "NOT Dirty" but you're having prob. with "Chkdsk Runs Each Time That You Start Computer"

you can try to use the coomand " chkntfs /D "
it will restore the machine to the default behavior; all drives are checked at boot time and chkdsk is run on those that are dirty.
and chkdsk should stop on next reboot.

edit --add
if you've disabled "Windows File Protection", turn it on before working on above steps.

i'd recommend not to use partition magic to prepare for any windows installation, use windows CD and then use partition magic for others, when done with parttioning you should format it again within windows.

First of all I want to thank you for your immediate answer
Second, I run "fsutil dirty query F:" as panging mentioned and I came up with this

Quote:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\astrolabos> fsutil dirty query F:
Volume - F: is Dirty
So, can anyone tell me who I can repair that?

P.s. how can we know if we have disable windows file protection?

Thanx in advance

a. 2 partitions

b. C: 10 Gb
F: 64 Gb

c. C: Boot partition. I have only the basic stuff to run windows. All my programs and mp3 are in F:
Both drives are NTFS formatted

I can't back up data from F: to C: due to lack of space

windows file protection????
locate following registry key..
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
"SFCDisable"=dword:00000000... this mean its enable.

next open CMD window, typein " chkntfs /D " (no qoutes) and enter.......close CMD window and reboot. and then reboot again.

if it's not work you'll have to move datas off the F: to CDs or something and then re-fomat the part. with windows tool.

Quote:
C:\Documents and Settings\astrolabos> fsutil dirty query F:
Volume - F: is Dirty

C:\Documents and Settings\astrolabos> fsutil dirty query C:
Volume - C: is Dirty
Any Ideas??

ok. the value of SFCDisable is zero. I wrote the "chkntfs /D" and I'm waiting for your green light to go

ok. I've done it and the situation still remains the same.
I've rebooted, the system checked both C: and F: it rebooted after the checkdisk was over, it checked again disk F: for consistency and after I entered WinXP again, it shows me that only F: is still dirty

have to re-format the parttition and then put the data back in.

BTW, do you use Partition Magic to prepare your windows installation?

I have ran into the same problem as you before its a nightmare from hell, if you run the chkdsk from comand prompt in windows it wont fix the problem, the way to fix it is get you your Windows XP CD and boot to it just like you would when you install windows except this time instead of proccedding to installation you will go into the recovery console it may ask you for your admin password then enter the driver letter of the drive which is causing problems and the then run chkdsk /f and that should fix the problem I know it has for me.

that's actually a good advice i forgot about all that before, i was focusing on something else too much.. if the prob. is the same and wont go.. will see if you can tweak windows abit and trying to fix if.
