RAID 0 Questions
I have ordered myself a new Maxtor 120Gb SATA disk identical to the one I already have in order to setup a little RAID array.
I'm going to set it up for striping (RAID 0) to improve performance but dont know if this will affect the data on the drive. Do I just plug the disk in and tell the RAID program to setup the array, which then adds the new disk with all my data intact or do the disks have to be formatted etc and have the data lost? |

You will need to back-up all the data you have on your current disk since it will need to be formated for the RAID 0 set-up

Not a prob... I myself actually run a RAID5 on my file server...... RAID is nice.... Just be sure you have important stuff backed-up otherwise if your RAID0 array crashes you will loose everything......

Are RAID arrays more prone to crashing? I've only ever seen this happen once, in a RAID 5 array in our server at work. Obviously with RAID 5 everything was ok though.

If you have 2 good drives it should not crash... I usually only see RAID arrays crash when the drives used are shady..... Old or mixed brands..........Yea that is the beauty of RAID5..... if one crashes drop a new one in and you are all set......

Another question. If I build the array as RAID 0, what will be the size available to me? Do I get 2x120Gb = 240Gb or do I just keep 120Gb. Obviously you only get 120Gb with mirroring, I'm just not sure about striping.

You get the full 240 GB

Check this out! be prepared to say WOW
WD Raptor RAID Performance - In this article, HardwareZone explore the performance of two Western Digital Raptor drives combined using the rather well-known Silicon Image SiI3112A SATA RAID controller. The results in the next few pages will give you an idea of the Raptor's RAID performance as compared to a 10,000RPM SCSI drive. We picked an older Seagate Cheetah 36ES drive for this comparison as its performance is more or less in the same ballpark. We'll also compare its results with some 15K SCSI drives. http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles...cid=10&aid=690 |
