Have you done any major hardware upgrades lately? How about any software installs or uninstalls? If so were the errors start occurring before or after? Are you running any anti-virus and is it up to date? If none of the above apply then try going back using system restore. If That does not work then you may have to reinstall XP. As a file or files could be corrupt. Can you think of anything at all that you may have done or something that could have happened to cause this?

So you did not have these problems until you installed Mcafee, right?

When you say that are you talking about all the registry entries it leaves...if so they have a guide to walk you through the process on the Symantec website...it can be a major pain in the butt to say the least....did you export your registry prior to making changes??

if its WMP 9, try to re-install it.. you can do that by using its installer or by double-click a file named "setup_wm" located in ...\Program Files\Windows Media Player, if it's not there, locate the file on your HDD.

norton's manaully uninstall guide only tell afew really, norton leaves alot more! i'd make a backup the whole registry before instaling any "Norton"!

always backup/export registry key, entry or value before modifying/adding or deleting any of its.. or just backup the whole thing regularly... a good utility called "ERUNT" can do it nicely. (The Emergency Recovery Utility NT - Registry Backup and Restore for Windows NT/2000/XP - Freeware)

there're two ways you can do to minimize or to end this problem.
1) do a repair install -- all your settings remained the same except hotfix/updates
2) fresh install.
could try to give you steps of how to re-install WMP 8, you need XP CD,
but it might ends up with ..no chance for backing up needed files...
