I've been having crashes and whatnot lately...
Just got setup again with a fresh install...but some of my problems haven't dissapeared... I replaced my 8500LE (230/230) with a 9200 128Mb (it isn't pro according to the box....which somewhat suprises me because i thought 128mb version of the 9200's were) And i was shocked and amazed not to find a 2 VGAs or even 1 vga and a din connector... ARG.... All the available Built by ATI radeons that i am able to pick up .... are retail... So far, i've only come across the AIW's as having what i need..... Anyways, my problem now... i can get ANY 3D accelerated program to last more the 5 seconds.. i've tried fresh installes with Cats version 3.4 3.5 3.6 I get that Windows XP PRO is blaming the Vid card and that something was stuck in the video drives (some thread) I think i'll take this back VERY soon and get a replacement... If anyone has any sugestions... here's my specs for help: Abit AT7-MAX2 Barton 2500+ @ default 2x166Mhz 512Mb DDR @ default 2x166 Radeon 9200 128Mb 8xAGP (defaults) Hercules Digifire 7.1 Windows XP Pro SP1 DirectX 9.0b Latest drivers... Nothing overclocked I have PLENTY of cooling... (my radeon 9200 didn't come with a fan...which for some reason, i found it rather odd as well) Compared to my 8500LE ... it looks tiny Need more system specs?... i'll hand em over |

Get the card replaced, at least that is what my friend had to do in your situation.

OK, got the replacement... it seems to work flawlessly..
However, after running the 3dmark03 benchmark... i'm getting rather quite poor results compared to my 8500LE 64mb @ (230/230) doesn't this sound right?

How much difference is there between them Judas? Also did you use the same drivers and keep everything the same?

.... i was getting in 3dmark03 build 330 about 1200-1300 with the radeon 8500le at 230/230.... (everything the same)
wait, i'll do this.... Exact same specs: CPU:Barton 2500+ 2x166mhz RAM:512 PC 2700 2x166mhz MOBO:Abit AT7-MAX2 The only thing that changed is that the radeon 8500le was 4xagp...and the 9200 is running 8x agp Running 3.6 cats 3Dmark03: 8500=1200-1300.... 9200=1100ish 3Dmark01se: 8500=8500.... 9200=7000 3Dmark2000: 8500=9000.... 9200=7500 My filrate scored are cut in half for multitextureing I could run soem game benchmarks...but there giving me similare results.....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 9200 a 128-bit interface? The 8500LE was a 256-bit?

actually, according to the specs.. it was 128bit as well... as it wasn't the enhanced version of the LE (250/250 speeds)
I had the slow poke 64mb (230/230) spec 8500le

Have you tried turning AGP-FastWrite off? Sometimes that improves performance considerably with AGP 8x.
There was something called: Sub Banded Transfer or something. It goes with AGP-8x, it's supposed to be dual channel-in and out. Unlike FastWrite which is just faster one direction.

I don't know then. Is the 9200 even supposed to perform all that well?

The 8500 and 9200 are running different architectures pipeline wise as far as i remember. So it really depends on the benchmark you use and what its testing like shaders etc.
The 8500 and 9100 will be better at 3d mark The 9000 and 9200 will be better at UT2k3 And so it goes on with the lead changing on different programs... Stu |

Just to clarify:
The 9000 has a single DX8.1 programmable vertex shader pipeline (vs. two in the 8500), but has a faster triangle setup engine. This means the 9000 is slower than the 8500 when handling complex vertex shaders or TRUFORM, but equal or slightly faster than the 8500 when handling lots of simple polygons. The 9000 can process one texture per clock cycle per rendering pipeline (like the 9700), whereas the 8500 could process two textures per clock cycle per pipe. However, both chips can still handle the same number of textures per pass (i.e., six), and the DX8.1 pixel shader units of the 9000 are much more efficient than those in the 8500, providing significantly higher performance in pixel shader-intensive applications. The 9000 adds support for higher precision 32-bit texture formats (10 bits per color channel vs. 8 in the 8500). The 9000 supports the ability to combine programmable pixel shaders with video streams, allowing applications like our FULLSTREAM video de-blocking. The 9000 includes dual integrated 400 MHz 10-bit per channel DACs, whereas the 8500 required an external secondary DAC for dual display. here Stu |
