URGENT HELP NEEDED... Changed a domain in Win 2k and can't login
OK, my father's laptop for work. I try to transfer some files from my computer to his on the network, but in order to do so i had to change his domanin from whatever it was to my work group's name. It said restart to make changes happen, yada yada. So i don't, i transfer the files. Come back to the computer and i'm locked out (idle for too long), i type in the password and it didn't like it. Cuz the computer isn't looking for the domain it needs. I try to safe mod boot. No go. Still looking at my workgroup rather than the domain needed. I try restoring to previous state, no good cuz i have to login.
Question is how do i change back to the original domain and get rid of it being on my network workgroup? I'm really fucked.... help. OH, and he doesn't know the username/password of any administrator names or things of the such.... Thanks in advance.

Geez, not to be pushy, but NO ONE has a clue? I mean, my dad was going into work tomorrow early to get some work done and he's complaining to me.
Some stuff happened though. He was able to figure out the administrator account and passoword. So we logged in BUT we can't change back to the original domain, we get an error saying "invalid domain or does not exist." So after reading that I wonder if he goes to work and actually connect to his docking station and to the network at work, WILL HE BE ABLE TO SEE HIS ORIGINAL DOMAIN?

If you do know the original domain it should be fine, but you would have to be connected to it, else it won't find it. I'm sure if he goes there and it doesn't work, the company will likely have technicians on hand that have seen it a million times over and have him up and running in moments.

Yeah, but he's going into work TOMORROW, on a holiday, no one will be there. I told him that I think if he goes in there and connects it SHOULD work. BUT, he doesn't know what DNS suffix to enter, nor do I. Can that be left blank? Or does that need a value?

I almost never fill out the DNS info because most good ISPs will automaticly find the best DNS for you.

NONONONOOOOO, company PC, I just need this to work by tomorrow morning. What do I do? Can he just go into work, sign in under the admin account, change the domain to what it should be (without DNS info) and restart?
OK, here...... Lets say he goes to work, changes the domain. If he is hooked up to his network and changes his domain then will it work? Cuz that error i get "invalid domain or does not exist" leads me to believe that he needs to be connected to it. RIGHT?

you do know what the DNS server is right? Its a Domain Name server. It has nothing to do with your companies network, its just for entering .com addresses rather than entering IPs.
The DNS server is never accessed for local connections. The company must be connected to some sort of ISP (Unless they are not connected to the outside world, and then filling out DNS info would be a moot point) |

THey are connected to a T1 or T3 line and all that crap. But I don't know any of the values to add for the DNS, neither does my dad. He just turns on his computer, enters password and works. That's all he does.
Wait, does the DNS address that would ask to be entered ONLY affect his internet and NOT the network? If he didn't enter the DNS that would just prevent him from surfing the net, right?

yes
Most ISPs will automaticly connect to a DNS server for you. Mine are blank on all of my computers right now, and they all work fine. |

you probably didnt have to change the domain anyways... all you have to do at the login screen is click "options" and you will get the deatiled login screen and select to log into the local machine rather than the domain... also when you changed the domain name on the machine did it tell you that the machine was disjoined from the domain? I dont think that it would if it wasnt set up at work.....

it wasn't set up at work. My dad uses the same domain and user name and password to log in at home (undocked). He's at work and i had him change from the workgroup to the old domain that he had and he still has no luck.......

It should not matter if there is no Domain to check your user and pass, if the user and pass are correct and no Domain (network) connection, it should still let you log on, just says that "No domain was available to verify your account... some network resources will be unavailable... bla bla."
When your pops is at work… best thing to do is when connected to his LAN, just right click on my computer and click the "Computer Name" or "Networking" tab and have him re-join his domain, just make sure that his user and pass are part of the active directory users and computers... if he has already tried this with the correct Domain and his username but wrong pass his account might be locked out... and would need and Admin to unlock... Also make sure that DCHP is in use (obtain IP automatically on the network adapter) I could take some screen shots and e-mail em to you (or if someone could host...) to walk u thru it. In the future, when he has the computer at home and on your LAN just do a search for his IP on your machine and you should be able to access it if his guest account is not disabled, and if he has a shared file folder with the guest account having the rights to write to that folder... no need to mess with workgroups and domains and all... If you have something in that "DNS" block, remove it. I am not 100% sure what your talking about, but none the less, it should not be needed, DNS should have noting to do with your problem... DNS makes it so you can type www.yahoo.com not 204.71.200.67 Hope that helps... edit: saw it was W2K Last edited by integra092; Sep 1, 2003 at 06:53 PM. |

He did go to work and tried to change his domain (right click my computer, then change from workgroup X to domain X). He did that, it is no go, tells him it cannot be found or is invalid. He's not throwing a fit over it so i guess he's getting it fixed early tomorrow. He can sign on under the admin name and do all his work that's on the HD but he can't access the network at work to do his REALLY IMPORTANT stuff. But I guess he's getting it fixed manana ASAP
