Networking issues
I've been trying to network my two Windows XP (home edition both) machines together here... One's wireless and the other is wired. Anyway, the way I have it set up, it's just the computer to the router to the internet. Only problem is when I run the networking wizard they don't recognize eachother. My one computer says it's still connected to the network that it was on at the last LAN party I had, while the wireless computer which I don't take to LANs only shows itself in network places. I'm trying to share a printer here but if I can't network them properly I can't do that. Could anyone help me out here, tell me why this isn't working and any clues on how to fix it?

If you’re seeing the other computer in network places just click into it and connect to the printer... (Make sure that the printer is shared...) By right clicking it and choose connect. Also check and make sure your using DCHP.
If still having a problem, maybe wire in both computers to the same switch or router to eliminate hardware as the trouble... Good luck. |

I don't see the computer in Network Places, and they're both connected to the same router. Thanks though

.....go into the network connections... (view by connections)
right click on the adapter that you are using to connect and click "REPAIR" i'm using XP Pro right now.... i'm not sure if this option is available in HOME because home eddition doesn't have strong networking capabilities....

Make sure that the DHCP server for your router/gateway is on and that you aren't bridging any connections on either of your computers and make sure that all of them are set to be on the same workgroup, since you aren't running a Domain. You can then try the Repair or you can get into a command prompt, just go to run and type CMD and hit enter, now type IPCONFIG /RELEASE and hit ENTER then type IPCONFIG /RENEW and hit ENTER and then you will want to go to your network places and view entire network and see if the other computer is there.

I am bridging connections apparently. How do I get rid of that... and what does it do exactly? My motherboard has two onboard NIC's, but I disable the one that I use at lan parties when I'm not at one....

Just select it and delete it otherwise you won't be able to connect the 2 computers, and then I suggest doing the CMD and Ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew it will work alot better then if you try to repair your connect because it might try to put the bridge back
(edit)Also after you do that make sure that it is set to get an IP from a DHCP server on all your connections (edit2) What its doing when it bridges the connections is routing packets and such and to do so it has to have a static IP address, so the you don't get to get the IP from the DHCP server in the router/internet device, so you can't get a valid IP address to be on the same logical network, for IP address' so your computers don't see eachother on the network because you aren't on the same Logical network. You don't have to use different NIC ports when you are switching between networks unless you have some settings that are unusual on your home network or at the LANs if one doesn't work try the other one, unless you want to use both at the same time. All those computers showing up in your network places are just Cached on your computer, windows keeps it there so you can access it faster and so it doesn't have to keep looking for computers constantly you can just try to go into them and windows will remove them from the list Last edited by scobywhru; Sep 3, 2003 at 04:08 AM. |
