Big Grin Where's the part that can kill ya?

I'm going to be putting in a Kingwin 450-watt,3 fan,
thermostat controlled, fan speed manual & auto adjustable,
miniature nuclear plant sometime this weekend.

I'm pretty good at routing wiring, reading the simple
schematic, all that good stuff.

Anything in particular I should know? I've heard there
is a coil or condensor in these things that if you
touch it just right, could possibly end your fun for
the forseeable future...

Where is this Harvester of Souls, and should I worry
about it, if I'm not taking the PSU apart?

Any other little tips and tricks welcome...

i would have helped....but as i've not much knowledge in this area.... i didn't think i should... as i would have probably said the wrong thing..... i was actually interested in an answer as well....... give it a little more time though.... as most of the time.... getting an answer within a day is pretty lucky.... 2-3 days is decent... (specifically dealing with what your doing)

I don't think much in a PSU can kill you as long as you use one hand. (Remember IBMs rule? or am I too old?) I have gotten hit with 120V from the house current, and I'm still here.

yeah, i know that much... what you do is make sure the current can't cross through your brain or heart.....and you'll generally live if anything happens.....

I’ve token 120 several times 3 that I can member (one @ home, one at friends home, once on a navy battle ship).. one time it could have been 220 but not sure..

It hurts like a mother ******....

But I takes but even a very low volt charge can stop your heart

Yea but there’s about a up to 2400V+if not higher (my 400W psu has 4 600V capacitors in clusters on the right side) charge in there waiting to kill you "deader n hell"..... if your grounded @ all and u get in contact with the right pint .... ZAP no more u ... it better safe than sorry/dead i try not to touch anything other than the massive heat sinks

just as well you dont live in the UK then, cause 240v is generally a sure fire way to be at the pearly gates.

I'm only alive because, I live in the US... stuck my finger in quite a few outlets in my early days!

It can help if, after turning ogff the mains power, you then tap the system's power button - this will attempt to start it, and should deplete the charge on the capacitors in the PSU.

A bolt from a high voltage capacitor can be painful, but unless taken hand to hand, is unlikely to kill you.

The other thing, is to leave as long as possible (after removing mains power and depleteing if possible), as these are electrolytic capacitors with a significant charge loss over time.

Though while "conditioning" a lower voltage electrolytic ( 50,000 uF at 25v ) by leaving it charged, there was enough left for one hell of a bang when I accidentally shorted it.

Amperage kills not voltage..... although enough voltage will light anyones insides on fire.... Amperage can kill instantly... shorting out all your neurons....

Ah yes, the old rhyme

"it's volts that jolts, and mils that kills"

The "personal protection" residual current circuit breaker (as SHOULD be used with all garden power tools) is normally a 30mA unit - and that current, would be fatal if maintained.

There is an additional factor, the duration of the current, as well as it's magnitude, and also it's location - this is in "ordinary" electrocution risk, primarily stopping the heart or paralysing breathing.

The EHT voltage in a monitor, is sufficient to deliver a lethal instantaneous current from the relatively low capacitance avaialble (mostly the glass of the tube between the inner and outer coatings - a bit like a leyden jar)

High voltage with minimal capacitance (eg. the output of an ioniser), can give you an unpleasant jolt, but is more like a static charge.

I've gotten zapped by 20,000 volts before, quite a few times- But it was very low amps-

It was in an electrostatic paint booth I ran for about 2 years. Proof that volts has nothing to do /w "power" of shock.

-reason I'm posting- doing a search for someone, trying to find where someone from ATI said it was OK to run AGP at 1.6v for stability- and came across this old post.

ANYWAY, Can't find it-

Well, we have 220 around here, and I've "tasted" it quite a few times; not to mention 380 (the three phase version).

BMG:

Thing is, doesn't matter who "got" what, there really isn't any need for one to get electrocuted.

With PSUs, the thing is not to open them... There is a high voltage part (some 310V, or 172 in the US) and you don't want to touch anything there.

Various coils inside, but hardly anything dangerous from outside; anyway, there are plenty of regulations on hazarduos devices - just read the warning label and you'll know all you need to know.
