New board in

Hello all, (please forgive typos, its late and im tired as hell)

First off I wrote a few days ago about new Mobo thats coming in. Details below in specs.
Well, after taking my old Soyo dragon out, and swapping all out for new board all went smooth with no probs. Until i actualy put power to it. It fired up, went to post, then reset, twice it did this. So i shit down inspected and all was in order. Tried again, same thing, but this time it got to the windows section were it shows safe mode and all, so i told it to go to last good config, reset and again got to same section. Now notice, no probs from before i started this new task, so at this point im really baffled. This being a few hours of no posts, reset, lockups, bios jumping to reset and all i finally was at my wits end and called MSI.

The dude told me the reason for this was it wasnt migrating over right, he was sure this was why, so being at the point of losing my mind, i did what i never wanted to do was to format drive.

That being done, it was time to reinstal Xp. Now the fun really starts. Tell bios to load cd up first, load from cd and away we go. Xp instaling its drivers, then bang lock up, i mean completely froze up. Reset bios, again it did this, but got a little further. Well to make this part shorter, it took at least 20 passes to get xp to install. There was even a point where it couldnt even locate my cd drive. So i started to think i had a bum board, but kept on trying to instal.

Xp would be instaling from disk, then crash,xp shut down, blue screen..this happened at least 10 times, with varying errors such as atapi.sys error, stack dump errors,irq_less or equal errors and a few more i forget now.

So at least 7 hours later and alot of swearing it finaly installed, i mean i nwo see the pretty Xp logo.

It gets to the desktop, all seems fine now. Start installing new board drivers and all, xp drivers from MS etc. Still no problems. Then all of a sudden, when i was putting in photshop, the comp froze. %#^#^ i couldnt believe it. Reset, no post. Reset again, it got to desktop. Froze again, this time to a irq less or equal again.

So then i said, lets do the new bios, loaded that up, flashed fine, hopeing this was the fix.
Rebooted up comp, no post, again no post. Then i used the diskette it had me make for recovery. Back to desktop.

And hour or so, no lock ups, no reseting on its own. Feeling pretty sweet at this time, but with no reason for the past problems i was still on edge. Ran some games, no probs there, cpu temp showing 39c at idle, tough games pushing up to 46C,so that all looked good.

Checked email, crash,reset,crash.......email checked, looking at desktop crash...oh $%$$$...

Called MSI...Now heres the clincher. Having telling him the probs from the get go, now they say it wasnt a migrtation problem, it may be from D.O.T, there auto overclocking bios..He told me to disable it, and now im here to tell you all the problems have stopped. Comp works great, lightning fast.

So, it now looks like i have a bad chip. Just as in my soyo board, as ive written in past posts, that i CAN not over clock ,from the set 133, if i pumpled it up to 134 it would crash also, or become extremely unstable and eventual crap out.

For the hell of it, i ran memtest to make sure im having no memory issues, ran it for 3 plus hours and all came up great, no errors at all.

So now i started to look at the chip. Loaded up the intel Chip check thing,

Results:
Intel(R) Processor Frequency ID Utility

NetBurst(TM) Microarchitecture: Yes
Expected Processor Frequency: 2.40 GHz
Reported Processor Frequency: 2.40 GHz
Expected System Bus Frequency: 533 MHz
Reported System Bus Frequency: 533 MHz

But obviously im assuming they are not, at least above a core of 133. ive tried to give the chip more power also, to no avail..So i guess this chip is defective, seems strange, yet there is no other solution as i can see. Thru to boards, it has proven to be the same thing.

Ran the comp hard tonite, 3d benches and all, cpu 47c solid and smooth ...

Ran 3D bench 2003 had a score of 4897

Ran 3D2001 and here are the results on that
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=6964867

Well im sorry for the long post. i wrote it out of relief and the possibility that some may may be having similar problems and has no idea whats the heck is going on. Disable DOT in bios.. Thats all it took....i say thats all, my god MSI give me back the 12+ hours i have lost in my life....

Anyways, thanks for reading on, and to the ones who just skimmed thru, and to the ones who read just a few lines.

God speed all.....

Yeah, MSI snuck in that DOT feature and I'm sure it's causing some headaches to other people as well.

Yeah sure is. Some good news though for MSI fans or to be fans. My neon light fan on the northbridge flickers sometimes and the neon lights go out or dont turn on at all. i wrote msi on it, and they are sending me one asap. Now thats a good company i must say.

i never did have good luck with MSI.... had a few boards and i wasn't impressed at all.... Anyways, I've grown to the habit of thoroughly reading through the manual and reading up one default settings and how Optimal/Safe auto settings will not change certain ones.... For Example, i learned that by default, Abit Board will set the Decode speed to Fast...(for my AT7-MAX2), well, it's all good with 100/133Mhz FSB cpus, but at 166, this can be a very serious problem with some lower end cpus.. Such as my Barton, (2500+ is the lowest right?), i didn't pay attention the the decode and couldn't figure out why sometimes it wouldn't post at all and when it did, it'd detect it as 502mhz or 1100mhz.... messed up..... set the Decode to normal (there is also a jumper on the motherboard that will force it to normal if you can't post at all to get into the bios) and EVERYTHING runs so sweet....fast....

Yeah i did to read all on it, ran the intel cpu testr to confirm speeds, 2.4 533fsb, yet i can not at any means get this chip to go past 133. Swapped memory, tested memory with mem test, ran cpu thru many heat testing prgrams and it runs rock solid, drive it to 134, well all freezes up. i dont get it. new PSU, 420 watts etc,so im at a loss. im just chaulking it up to a weak chip, though most disagree wit that idea, yet no one has come up with any fixes either.

My last board, soyo dragon , used to have a 1.6 will in it, hasd that o/c to 2.0. Then got my p4 2.4 and cant go up with it at all. This is why i bought a new board, thinking maybe i can push this baby a bit, bahh nothing. i will say it runs smoother in new board, or maybe its just that now my radeon 9700 can be in a 8 AGP setting, who knows.....But i guess ill never figure this one out...

new board most likely will give you a nice smoother feeling...as well better preformance.... i had a duron that wouldn't overclock at all as well... bump it to 101FSB... and boom..even had a new board in it ..nope..just wouldn't do it.... but it was solid at 700....just bad luck of the draw...

Yeah i suppose, but strange thing is, i consider that being defective, and when i say that most say how can it be?? Well at 533 i should be able to get clock speeds above 133. Thats my response to those " well how can it be defective" The reasoning speaks for itself i would think. Nice to know im not the only one who had a bum chip....
