My younger son had told me a couple weeks ago that he'd like to bring his computer by and have me go through it and tweak and/or recommend some things that will make it perform better. (He's had it away at college.)
This evening I happen to notice a lone, unfamiliar computer sitting on the kitchen counter. Oh, I thought, he dropped off his computer. So, I took it into the office, hooked up the necessities, pulled off the side panel, and took a gander. Hmmmm....no upgrading video on this one....there's no AGP slot. ![]() I went ahead and started it up. Started without any problem and got to the Logon screen. User's name, Tom. Hmmmm....my son's name isn't "Tom". What's going on here? Took a look around on the hard drive. None of the programs looked anything like what my son would have needed....at least not most of them. Maybe I'd better wait till my older son gets home and see if he knows what's going on. About 30 minutes later, he did. Here's the scoop: The comuter is a PII/Celeron, 366 Mhz, 32 MB RAM. 6 GB WD HD, NIC CARD (it's on the LAN now) and uses an ATi onboard graphics card. It's one of those "PowerSpec" computers that I seem to recall MicroCenter selling some time ago. It also has a CD Writer and CD ROM drive. Windows 98SE, and just a few other little things. The bottom line: He picked it up today at a garage sale for a grand total of $6.00 ![]() That's not a typo. It's Six dollars....and no cents. ![]() He thinks he'll be able to play Wing Commander and Pirates on it without having to use a slowdown app.

I just happened to have a 256 MB PC100 stick of RAM here in a drawer. I added that to the 32 already in the system and.....man, it came alive!! LOL
