Well there you have it, the best just got better. A 4.5ms access time is just insane if I must say...WTG WD!!!
Now to just see how much these babies will cost ![]() http://www.wdc.com/en/company/releas...-A3DBED7B48C4} |

all the improvements, except dual platter will be in the new 36 gig vers too. so they should be almost as fast.

Load times
This will increase gaming load times, I believe. Well, basically anything that has to do with your HDD.

I've had two Raptors in RAID 0, so far I've had three fail. The increase in speed was minimal at the most. WD, has got a lot of explaining to do to get my business again.
I've had 4 WD drives fail in the last month alone.

I'll stick to the serial ata maxtors very reliable and dont need extra cooling granted they spin @7200 rpm but the transfer rate is still up to 150

*EDIT* I have also been reading up some and supposedly WD, fixed a lot of the problems with the Raptor drives. Sinse they were SCSI 10k-rpm drives, with just a redesigned interface, that caused a lot of problems.

They are not just revampt PATA drives, they are a smaller diameter platter.
The faster spin generally causes the lower seek time, but the heads need to be redesigned to cope with the faster spin, of course the technology is already there in SCSI drives ![]() So it either a revampt IDE drive or a cut down SCSI drive with a SATA interface slapped on. Personaly if you need the speed are are willing to pay the prices (even of the Raptors) you should look at getting SCSI drives. They are faster and the makers have been designing them for a long time now. Yes WD used to make SCSI but they sold that buisiness off (as they couldn't cut the mustard )Certainly why bother with them in the RAID0 fashion when you should get he faster SCSI to start with. After a few generations the 10K IDE drives will be fine. And yes they have had reported problems (and many people having failed drives) Looking at Oct/Nov release. (also not they still use a pata to sata bridge so it's not true sata )Me, i'd rather have a reliable drive than a fast one that doesn't last long...
