Will you buy an A64?

Thats the question right there. I'm doing a bit of pre-marketing research here, being the Athlon 64 is almost upon us(hopefully), and finding out generally why you'd be doing it.

The question is not weather it'll be useful, more that if there will be a formidable market for it, because we all know high sales gets support from software companies. That would make this the dawn of 64 Bit on the average computer. I think its most valuable asset at the moment is the Opteron brings powerful 64 bit server tech down to a reasonable price. Though its success at home has yet to be known.

The 64 is fairly powerful in 32 bit, so it won't be a complete loss for AMD in any way. It defiantly makes the transition to 64 bit easier. Some might not even use the feature, as its just icing on the cake.

Personally I'm going to wait to see with the FX can do before I make the plunge.

Share your thoughts if there's an answer better suited for you.

Personally after seeing some benches I will be getting one right away. The only thing I will hold off on for a coulpe of weeks is the right motherboard. But I think the ABIT KV8-MAX3 will be the board for me.

I still can't bring myself to get an A64, maybe when the price drops like Craig said.

I have yet to see a real reason to go to 64-bit.

Ditto, A64 should have an average quality price by that time, and we can see if the Prescott is that special.

Suppossedly the Prescott will have "64-bit Inside".

The A64 dosen't cut it for me, if I really wanted a higher 3DMark score, I would OC my system, but I don't even do that. I see no advantage to 64-bit with current software, except if it's a server.

When you people say "FX" do you mean the Athlon64 FX-51? And when are the BTX, DDR2, and PCI-X slated for release? And yeah, I'll be getting an Athlon64 FX-51

Yes raven. We do.

BTX wont be popular till next decade. A 2007 slated release means about 2 years till ATX is no longer being sold.(if BTX catches on completely) Not worth waiting for it for an enthusiast. Or even an average gamer.

DDR2 hah. Expect DDR 10,000 before DDR2. They could come out with it tomorow... but with DDR selling so well why would they?

As for PCIX... why? most boards are going everything onboard and video cards aren't even close to using up AGP 8x. In fact if anything more and more processing is being done on the chipset...

Meh, don't hold your breath for these features.

Hey Shankims. You calling Intel CEO a liar? LOL. They'll only let you know that theres a 64 bit mode if AMD succeeds... its kinda like what they tried to do with PAT on its third party vendors.

I thought DDR2, PCIX and BTX were all coming early 2004, not to mention 64 Windows. Anyway, Im waiting more to see how they do, and then determine from there so I dont buy too early and realize the other is much better, etc. I thought PCIX was supposed to make graphics easier to access than AGP and thus better for combining overall. Only way to wait and see. I decided on this to see how well 64 bit apps are progressing too. Seems to be the date where a new computing generation will commence

Think of it this way…

For 1 Intel sucks and will pull forth a 64 bit CPU from there arses just wait and see…
Intel does more 180’s and 360’s then a skateboarder…. They say what ever it takes to keep their brain washed subordinates happy.

Amd on the other hand is trying new things moving in new directions. Consumer version of windows XP 64 bit, ut2003 64 bit, a lot of games already on board for users systems that support 64 bit. It’s only a matter of time till Intel wake up and realizes their error. 64 bit is the next best thing and all the vendors will eventually support it.

Anyone with ½ a brain should wait unless you rolling in cash.

Because of the simple fact the price will go down! And that they will come out with new standards and new motherboards, new chipsets … not to mention aren’t new slot style video cards are in the works... With all the new stuff hitting I wouldn’t want to be the first to buy. The 30-90 days latter be sorry because these really cool new features just make what I have suck real bad in comparison ….

I’ll wait a few more months … let the prices drop! thier overpriced right now. they allways price gouge the first ones to buy.....

I will not deny that the A64-FX's will be very nice chips, but I will be waiting untill the FX's come out, otherwise, I'm not willing to risk it. Unless I see a drastic following and explosion of 64-bit software.
