PLease Help ME!

Ok this is the deal, i left my Pc on when i left my house, when i got home, my PC was off, turns out my Powersupply failed and i dont kno what typa damage it may have caused, i noticed my Power LED was still on when i went to hit reset, (i knew it was bad), so i took it upon my self to take my PSU out and hook it up to my dads PC to see if it realy was the PSU, i hooked it up turned on the PC, it ran for about 20secs then shorted out, i hook up my dads "working" psu hit the power button and nuthing happened, please dont tell me i burned out 2 motherboards in less then 2 hours... So my questions are, if the PSU was bad what type of damage could it have caused, (ex: memory, vid card, mobo?), its hard to check the forums, i may not even be able to check till tomorrow, so please reply if u kno anything...

Thanks in advanced!, i realy hope i dont owe my dad a new comp!

This is more of a hardware/technology question than audio; moved.

Any number of components could have shorted out when the supply went....I've seen many combinations of things "fried" by a shorting PSU. Your gonna have to trial and error that one big guy...start with the mobo and work your way around....Sorry it's not much help ...but when it comes to that anything couldve "fried"

ok, when you said nothing happened do you mean NOTHING happened? like the computer didnt turn on? or nothing BAD happened and your computer worked fine? because if your pc just didnt start up then i would have to say that yes... you shorted out the mobo... i am pretty sure it STARTS UP (fan's turn on etc.,) without anything other than the cpu, eh... it may also need ram and the video card, don't remember

when i hit the power button the only thing that happened was all the fans in the case flickered and my 12" light flickered, but nothing ran for more then .5 of a secound. then i would have to unplugg it, put the plug back only to see that same thing happen again... I already bought a new MOBO nd PSU, i swear to god if i lost my $330 vid card u wont be hearing from me anymore....................

What kind of PSU was it? I'll stay away from whatever it is.

Happened to me last week, sounds like the mobo to me, exactly the same thing with the fans etc coming on for about .5 sec, processor & vid card were OK just needed new mobo. Good luck!

thanks for the support, BWX the PSU was already thrown out so i couldnt check the brand name, but take this advice, u get what you pay for, dont buy a 600WATT PSU just because its cheap, (EX: u can find very cheap PSU's from pricewatch.com), pay the extra cash and u wont have to go threw 2 weeks without ur precious machine...

You got that right-- you have to look at the rails- and even then it's hard to judge. I've seen benchmarks where they use very expensive equipment to test the "noise" the PSU's filter- or don't filter from the AC line coming in..
They never test inexpensive PSU's like that though. But Some of the expensive Vantec's had lots and lots of noise, so you can't always count on getting a good one just because you spend a bunch either, but your odds are better!

seems like anything from Vantec has lots and lots of noise, im stuck with the volcan0 11+ as is, that thing is loud enough, but for X-mas i plan on getting a water c00ling kit for the beast, but first i need a working PC.... :-)
