Antec... good RMA service?

Recently, my PSU(Antec True 480W) seems to be gone bad. I am pretty sure. So I contacted Antec few days ago.
Today, I've got reply from Antec and they told me to test the PSU properly as instructed in a link they provided. They are telling me to do this test first and if the PSU is bad for sure then contact the RMA department.

Looks like I have to have some equipments like multimeters and stuff for the test. Well, I don't wanna do that.

I thought replacing my PSU with my spare and seeing that there's no such problems(random reboot) with the spare PSU ultimately proves my True480W PSU is bad.

How am I gonna manage this test procedure they are asking me to? Or should I just contact the RMA Dept?
Any experiences with Antec, guys?

Thanks

Just call the RMA department and pray

I bought that same PSU about a year ago and had it die on me and take the mobo and cpu out after only 6 months of operation. Got the replacement and it did the same thing but thank god that time it didnt take out the new mobo and cpu.

both times i had to deal with the retailer since Antec wouldnt RMA properly

And, What is wrong woth this PSU(True 480W)? This thing happen to be well regarded among quite a few hardware sites.

Im not too sure whats wrong with it but this is what happened

I had switched out my HSF to the volcano9 and done a mod to my 9700NP to put the thermaltake coolling system on it

at the same I decided to spray out the inside of the case since I had a little bit of dust in it (were talking a really small amount)

so after I did that I put the CPU/HSF/Video Card back in and plugged the machine back in.

Started the machine up and electrical arcing, smoke, and ozone. I could literally see arcing in the case so I pulled the surge protector out of the wall to kill the power.

Found out it had taken the CPU, and mobo with it (after losing my spare 350W RAIDMAX PSU to it). RMA'ed the CPU and PSU (was too lazy to RMA the mobo). Went out and bought the GA-7VAXP Ultra motherboard (had originally had just the plain GA-7VAXP) waited for the new CPU and PSU to get in

Reassembled the machine with the new parts. Booted up and same exact damn thing (and yes the new PSU was brand new from the retailer and still shrink wrapped from Antec)

At the point it did it this time though I was faster and managed to save the whole system this time.

Went out and bought a 300W PC Power & Cooling PSU.

Its worked just fine with pretty much perfect railings ever since.

This is whats in the system with that PSU

Athlon XP2200+ (166FSB but still the same speed as I dropped the multi)
512MB Corsair XMS DDR333
2x 80GB WD SE HD's
Toshiba DVD-ROM
Lite-On 48x24x48 CD-RW
Teac Floppy Drive
Radeon 9700NP (oced to pro speeds and with the thermaltake cooling kit)
2 Case Fans
Volcano 9

Wow! That must've been quite a mess. What's the 300W PSU you bought after all? Just gneric?

My problem started out with and removable mobile HDD rack. I originally had my HDD inside the case. I bought and installed this mobile HDD rack and frame since I had extra HDD laying around. With the rack installed, the rough ride started and lasted for over 5 months. Symptoms were random reboots and hang-ups. So I removed the mobile rack and installed the HDD inside the case as before but the problem remained. I thought it would be motherboard, RAM, or heck, HDD cable. lol. Until recently(about a month ago), I never suspected PSU. I had so much faith in it because the PSU has been so good to me since I built my system last year. And, it's ANTEC for god's sake. I was gonna get a new mobile rack since the symptom started with it.
A week ago, I tried replacing the PSU with my 350W spare(also Antec) just to be sure. Boy, was I worng. Now my machine is running just fine with the spare.

Anyway, I should e-mail RMA Dept then. I tried contact NewEgg.com but they told me to talk to Antec.
Wish me luck.

the 300W I ended up buying for it was made by a company called PC Power and Cooling.

They make some of the best PSU's in the industry

I know the company. Their PSU are EXPENSIVE as I recall but look like heavy duty, bullet proof units. You must have paid a little more dough than others, even other brands like Enermax. Right? Well, going through all the troubles we already had it would have been actually cheaper if we had gone with PC Power and Cooling PSUs in the first place. Don't you think?

yo crash if that does happen will amd/intel and the mobo manufacturer replace the parts? or will they blame it all on the PSU cause im afraid of this also.
