AMD Athlon 64 3000+

That CPU is a lil speed demon. Reading the review of the AMD Athlon 64 3400+ over at Anandtech. This CPU simply dominates the price/performance market. (CPU only) When including the Mobo which is well over the $200 CAD mark, it's another story. I do agree with Anandtech's comment on how the AMD 64 3400+ simply killed off any reason for a knowledged user to purchase an FX 51. I'm sorry, but unlocked multipliers don't sell things for me.

P.S - Newcastle core which is what the AMD Athlon 64 3000+ is built with now has 512 KB of Cache. Why? I thought AMD was pushing out 64s with 1 MB? Cost? That would explain the cheaper CPU, but is that the sole reason? Anandtech has some speculations, but I was wonderin gif people actually knew.

The speculations I've read are that in producing the 1MB cache chip, there are some that come out with defects in the cache. And of those chips, there are some with defects that affect only a part of the cache, so that disabling the half of the cache with the defect, yields a perfectly working chip, but with 512k cache. So, rather that just throw those chips away, they go ahead and disable that half of the cache, and sell it to at least make some money. I think it makes sense

Yeap

Makes sense. Intel does it for Celeron, Radeon 9800 SEs are prime examples as well. They may look like rejects, but the 3000+ are kick ass rejects

$200 CAD. Don't know what that is in USD but I just found a ECS 755A Full ATX board for around $91 USD I think that is less than $200 CAD so the price's on Athlon 64 boards seem's to be going down. I've seen some other good boards for less than $130 USD so they seem to be going down. The boards used to range around $160-200 USD, but they seem to be getting around the price of the Athlon XP boards. Price per feature wise. Intel boards I think are still more expensive.

STAY AWAY FROM ECS!!! No Service and NO support. 30% of boards returned defective. Rated one of the worst mobo manufactures out there. I just bought one to see if i could get it to work. Well the usb ports were defective. Returned and bought DFI board.

I'm talking about quality midrange

Midrange boards aren't available at vendors here And yeah, ECS aren't very ELITE.

hohum will become famous soon enough

I wouldn't recommend ECS boards at all... I dunno about the board's reliability, but their website is a joke. I tried to find updated drivers for an ECS mobo a while back, and simply gave up as it was so badly organised - I couldn't find anything I needed. God help you if you lose the driver disk supplied with the mobo

I wouldnt use an ecs mobo as a doorstop personally
Go with the via platform(gigabyte in my opinion GA-K8VNXP rocks!!!) for the 64 bit platform you'll be happier in the long run.

It's not like I was saying ECS was makes good boards. I know they are junk I was just saying it was cheap . I would rather go with the low end Giga-byte or MSI boards. Like MSI's K8T Neo-FIS2R motherboard that is $128 USD at Newegg and has a $20 mail-in rebate (Like I care about rebate's unless they are Instant) or Giga-byte's K8VT800 which is $99 USD at Newegg but is out of stock... I would probably go with Giga-byte for it's price. I mean it's got all of the PCI slots and it is still under $100.
