networking question

Hello there

OK I'm having some trouble getting my setup working. What I'm trying to do is basically share my Internet connection among multiple devices. Easy, you say. Ah, but it's not your everyday setup.

Basically I need to know how to hook up a router to an ICS-enabled PC (to take the shared connection, and distribute it to multiple clients.) I know it may sound dumb, but it's the only way I can share our Internet service. If you need to know the full details of the whole setup, just ask me.

SO, I have ICS enabled on the adapter connected to the ISP. And the PC is connected via cross-over to my router's WAN port. And a laptop (and PlayStation2) is connected to one of the router's ports, but cannot connect to the Internet through all that. (If I connect the laptop directly to the PC via cross-over, it connects to the Internet just fine.)

Here's what I have the IP's are set up as:
Quote:
PC
192.168.0.1
|
|
192.168.0.207
router
192.168.0.99
|
|
192.168.0.124
laptop
If you follow, the PC's IP for ICS is .1, and the IP it gave the router is .207. Then I set the router's LAN IP to .99, and the router gives the laptop .124.
Originally, the router's LAN IP was set as .1, but I changed it to .99 to see if that was causing the problem.

Here are the gateways & masks, if it helps:
Code:
router
IP address 192.168.0.207
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1

laptop
IP address 192.168.0.124
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.99
I've tried release/renew/reboot on the router and laptop, but no Internet so far. And like I said, if I connect the laptop directly to the PC, everything works fine after a release/renew. I don't know, is there maybe some inherent problem with connecting through multiple NAT's? (my PC is also going through a NAT from my ISP.) I'm pretty stumped here, even though I'm by no means a veteran at networking

Thanks for any help!

Wow, that made my head hurt.

So, if I understand this correctly, you've got the following:

Internet -> PC with ICS
PC with ICS -> Router
Router -> Laptop, PS2, etc

Is that about right?

What I don't really understand is why you're using a router in this setup at all. If you replaced it with a switch, everything would/should work great. Routers are designed to move data across networks, but everything you're using is the same network (192.168.0.0), and that may be causing a problem here. Also, I'm a little confused. You said that ICS gave the router a .145 IP address, yet in your diagram and chart, it's listed with a .207 IP address.

the router should be hooked to the internet and all the other computers to the router

why the funky setup?

Yes that's right

The .145 was my mistake, just a typo fixed.

I'm using a router, because that's what I have I don't want to buy anything if I don't have to. I just thought it would work.
The router has a switch built-in tho, I think. How would I hook it up if I were to use it as a switch? hook the ICS to one of the standard LAN ports? I didn't think that's the proper way . . . . I thought I could treat the ICS PC as I would a cable modem, you know? Just hook it up to the WAN port, and the rest of the devices to the LAN ports.
To clarify, I don't need the PC to be "on the same network" as the laptop (I don't need to shares folders with each other, or do network gaming or anything.)

I cannot do it the normal way; this is the only way I can do it with my ISP.

Yeah, to use the router as a switch, just plug the cross cable from your ICS PC into one of the LAN ports, and that *should* work. Just make sure all other devices (laptop, PS2) are set to automatically assign IP and DNS (which they should be anyway).

Well, it's not the proper way to use a router, but it should work.

I've never seen such a.. unique.. setup before, but I couldn't tell you. Try using the router as a switch and see if that works.

please explan why a brief explanation would be ok.

does your router not have mac adress cloneing? or something

even with activation software thi still works just fine becouse with the rouiter the isp only sees the routers cloned mac adress

also my router acts like a dhcp server so it sets up my network adresses/ip's for me

mabe i should bug out of this converstaion lol i since a rubegoldberg experiment going on lol

OK, brc, I'm gonna give that a shot and see how it goes

Lol Neon, no secrets, I'll explain it now. The ISP is wireless, my apartment complex is a hotspot. So they gave me a USB Wi-Fi adapter, which is plugged into my PC of course. Since the connection is through that Wi-Fi adapter, I can't plug it into the router, and do a traditional home network. So I tried to so the next best thing . . . enable ICS on the PC it's plugged in to, and plug the PC into the router. It seemed like a simple solution at the time

Well I'll be jiggered. It works! Not with crossover, but with regular straight-through. Cool the laptop can see the Internet, Now I just gotta see if my roommate's PS2 can connect as well.

Thanks a bunch brc!

What do you mean? My Internet speed? If so, the service is 1.1 Mbps, I'm happy with it overall.

Just to add, it stopped working the next morning But I had a thought, and went through and set the IP/mask/gate/DNS manually, and everything is fine now. PS2 and everything works fine. Except there's too much lag in NBA Live 2004 So my roomie's mainly hooked on SOCOM II

Crash Override is an unknown quantity at this point

good thing you got it solved

after reading the first post up top I was just going to suggest hooking up a normal pass through cable as crossovers are only needed for pc to pc talk not for pc to router

connecting a PC to the WAN port of a router requires cross-over
