Case in point...
I'll be upgrading my PC soon to the 64-bit AMD (when they actually hit full stride) and the next Radeon release...(R420).
I've been looking at some cases, wanting to replace my Alienware one, (seems...amatuerish now). I really like those clear acrylic cases, but someone mentioned some problems with them...overheating because they "don't transfer any radiant heat as well as a metal case..." Something like that... Anyway, my question is...what type of Full-Tower case should I get? Also, to those people that run their PC's with the side covers off: Doesn't your rig get dusty...dirty? I live in Texas, which according to at least one study, is the dustiest state per cubic foot of air in North America. ![]() Thanks for any input. |

Very pretty, but plastic doesn't provide much if any RF shielding either...

yeah... plastic bad... go aluminium with side window... I recommend the Thermaltake V2000... but there are plenty of good case out there. Although... I have built a clear acryllic case for someone, and it actually kept very cool... this was with a barton 3000

i wouldn't go full tower uless you need the space becouse it'll be harder to cool etc you could make up for it with some magor air flow

Yes...but also Cowboy...having things crammed together...all generating heat....
You make a good valid point, but...other factors...might factor in...dunno without testing. As for cooling...I have probably one the better fan equipped, and airflow layouts in my current rig. Plan to do the same on the semi new one. And the RF shielding comment... Thanks...I didn't think of that. Good point. More comments and suggestions please. |

To answer the question about those of us (yes, I'm one of them
) who run with one side off the case:The biggest thing is to NOT store the case on the floor....especially not on a carpeted floor. I have mine right up on the desk not far away from the monitor. The worst place you can put a computer is down on the floor. That's where all the dust settles. And, no, it doesn't get nearly as dusty because I can SEE when it gets dirty enough to need a cleaning.

So right Dyre, here at the university I see half a dozen to a dozen units a year that suffer from failures with the root cause being heat buildup caused by dust accumulation which freezes fan bearings and coats components with the insulating dust - trapping the heat on the components.
